Tottenham could offer Southampton star Kyle Walker-Peters a chance to return to the club

Tottenham Hotspur’s defence has been a mess this season.

First-choice centre-back pairing Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven have both missed a big chunk of the campaign, while Destiny Udogie has also been sidelined since late December. He has missed action for over a month due to a hamstring injury. Radu Dragusin is now injured as well and has been ruled out for the rest of the season with an ACL injury to his right knee.

Despite signing Kevin Danso on loan from RC Lens in the winter transfer window, Spurs still require reinforcements at the back. Now that the transfer window is closed, the Hotspur Way chiefs have to wait until the summer to start making moves again.

According to talkSPORT’s Transfer Notebook by Alex Crook, Southampton full-back Kyle Walker-Peters could be offered an opportunity to re-join Tottenham.

A product of the Spurs’ famed academy, Kyle Walker-Peters left his boyhood club to join Southampton back in 2020. The Englishman has gone on to feature 191 times for the Saints, registering seven goals and 11 assists. He has made 22 league appearances this season, although the full-back has been a part of the team with the worst defensive record in the Premier League.

Walker-Peters snubbed an opportunity to join Galatasaray last month, despite the Turkish club showing an openness to meet Southampton’s £8m asking price. He is now into the final five months of his contract at the St Mary’s Stadium and the South Coast club have accepted the fact that they will lose him on a free transfer at the end of the season.

The aforementioned report adds that the three-cap England international is being monitored by both Fulham and West Ham United ahead of his potential free-agency status.

With Southampton appearing doomed for relegation, Walker-Peters and his camp will have already started weighing up their options ahead of an expected departure from the St Mary’s Stadium. A move back to Spurs should be a tempting proposition for the full-back, who made 24 senior appearances during his time at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Ange Postecoglou could hugely benefit from having a versatile operator like Walker-Peters in his defensive ranks. Capable of playing on both sides of defence, and as a wing-back, the Edmonton-born talent will be a solid option to compete with the likes of Pedro Porro, Archie Gray and Destiny Udogie for a spot in the first team.

At 27, he is at the peak of his powers and should ideally make an immediate impact if signed. We can land a potential bargain deal by signing Walker-Peters on a free transfer from Southampton. Any probable move for the attacking full-back makes perfect sense on paper, as he already knows the club inside out, and that could make our gaffer’s job a lot easier.

That being said, it will be interesting to see whether the player wants to return to Tottenham or not and be a part of the exciting project.
