Djed Spence produced a Man of the Match display in Tottenham Hotspur’s 1-0 win over Manchester United
Tottenham Hotspur deservedly beat Manchester United 1-0 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday. James Maddison scored in the first half from close range which eventually turned out to be the winner, helping Spurs collect back-to-back victories for the first time in the Premier League this season.
Thankfully for the North London club, Ange Postecoglou welcomed a few key players from injury against Manchester United. The likes of Guglielmo Vicario, Brennan Johnson, Wilson Odobert and Maddison featured in the game. Several players were excellent on the evening, Vicario keeping a clean sheet on his first game back from injury since November, Maddison scoring the all-important goal, Kevin Danso producing an imperious display at the back and Djed Spence shining as well.
Djed Spence continues to prove to Ange Postecoglou that he might have made a big error in judgement in not making him a regular starter in his team as the full-back impressed once again in a Tottenham shirt. The Englishman was terrific throughout the game, making an impact at both ends of the pitch.

Following Spence’s Man of the Match display in the 1-0 win over Ruben Amorim’s side, former Spurs midfielder Jamie Redknapp lavished praise on the full-back. Interestingly, he claimed that, had there not been an injury crisis at White Hart Lane this season, the 24-year-old would perhaps not have gotten minutes under Ange Postecoglou.
“He is a young player with tremendous talent – speed, agility, can defend, cool on the ball, he has a football brain. You just need a bit of belief. If there aren’t these injuries we probably don’t see him. He was excellent,” Jamie Redknapp said about Spence on Sky Sports (h/t BBC Sport).
Indeed, Spence’s class shone through against Ruben Amorim’s side. The former England youth international has been one of the rare bright spots amid Spurs’ injury-hit, awful campaign. His minutes on the pitch have increased thanks to Destiny Udogie’s injury absence, with Spence often operating as a left-back in recent weeks and months. It is fair to say that Spence has grabbed his opportunity with both hands.

Both offensively and defensively, the London-born talent was levels above Man United’s wing-backs. He did a look of good work and made some incisive passes in the final third while dealing with Diogo Dalot and Joshua Zirkzee well.
While Udogie is back from injury now and was an unused substitute against Man United, it would be extremely hard to displace Spence right now. He seems to have nailed down a spot at left-back, but if Big Ange wants to re-integrate Udogie into the side, it would not be surprising if Spence now gets the nod ahead of Pedro Porro at right-back.
