Tottenham full-back Djed Spence could be in contention for a spot in the England squad, feels Gary Lineker
Tottenham Hotspur made it back-to-back wins in the Premier League on Sunday when they beat Manchester United 1-0 at home.
A 13th-minute goal from James Maddison fired Spurs to victory, and the result saw them climb up to 12th in the Premier League table. It was also just the second clean sheet the Lilywhites have kept at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this season – giving some much-needed breathing space for boss Ange Postecoglou.
Several players stepped up to the plate and delivered the goods against Man United. One of Tottenham’s standout performers was Djed Spence. The full-back, along with youngsters Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall, have been the rare bright spots over recent months in an otherwise dismal campaign at N17.
He continues to be one of Spurs’ consistent performers and once again at left-back, he put in a fantastic shift. Djed Spence delivered a Man of the Match display against Man United on Sunday evening, leading to Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp showering praises on the full-back. And Redknapp’s thoughts have now been echoed by former England playmaker Gary Lineker.

Speaking on The Rest is Football podcast, Gary Lineker felt Spence fully deserved his Man of the Match accolade for his rampaging display in the 1-0 win over the Red Devils. And then the highly-regarded pundit spoke about the Tottenham full-back being a potential option for new England boss Thomas Tuchel for next month’s World Cup Qualifiers.
“Absolutely. I was really impressed with Djed Spence again. I think he was, I’m quite rightly, given man of the match by Gary Neville,” Lineker told Micah Richards on The Rest is Football podcast.
“He was up and down. He was good defensively. He was good on the ball. It’s funny, isn’t it, that about a year ago, well, not even that really, actually during the Euros itself, we were going, you know, the left-back problem for England.
“And then suddenly you get three emerge at once, you know, with [Myles] Lewis-Skelly, obviously Lewis Hall and Djed Spence, you know, three young players that suddenly look really strong in that position.
“And I would think one of them will be playing in Thomas Tuchel’s first game, which is only just, what, a month away now. So, they’ll be fighting for that position.”

Spence appears to have turned his Spurs career around. From being a castaway at the start of the season to now one of the first names in the teamsheet, the Englishman has come a long way under Ange Postecoglou. He took the opportunities with both hands when it came during the injury crisis, with now Destiny Udogie facing a huge task to regain his starting left-back spot from the 24-year-old.

Indeed, Spence could offer a solution to England’s left-back conundrum. Primarily a right-back, the London-born talent has delivered solid performances from the left-back position for Spurs, notably keeping Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah quiet in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final in January.
All in all, he deserves a call-up to the senior England squad for March’s 2026 World Cup Qualifiers against Albania and Latvia.
