Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero has barely played this season due to injury problems
Tottenham Hotspur’s injury crisis seems to be easing up of late.
Ange Postecoglou welcomed five players back from injury on Sunday against Manchester United. Four of those played in the 1-0 home win over Man United, with Destiny Udogie being an unused substitute.
January recruits Kevin Danso, Mathys Tel and Antonin Kinsky, coupled with the key stars returning last Sunday, means Spurs could actually get some winning momentum and climb the Premier League table. However, first-choice centre-back pairing Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven are yet to return.
Ange Postecoglou dropped the latest injury update on the duo before the game against Man United, stating they will be back in the next couple of weeks. Both Cristian Romero and Micky Van de Ven have undoubtedly been Tottenham’s biggest misses this campaign.

As for Romero, he is the leader at the back and his absence has mightily hurt Spurs. The South American is currently under contract until 2027 at White Hart Lane, but the club are willing to hand him a new deal which will see the defender commit long-term and become their highest earner. While talks are already believed to be underway, the 2022 World Cup winner will need convincing as he is frustrated by the club’s lack of progress since his arrival.
Reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham would prefer to see Romero not being offered a new contract and instead sold at the end of the season.
“I don’t think we should be offering him that kind of contract,” John Wenham exclusively told Tottenham News.
“That sounds crazy because we are 14th in the Premier League and I’m talking about selling our Argentinian World Cup-winning defender. However, he just isn’t available enough.
“He looks as though he is going to miss the majority of this season. Therefore, if there was an option in the summer to double the £40million we spent on him, I would sell Romero.”

Tottenham splashed around £40million to sign Romero from Atalanta in 2022. He hasn’t fully managed to live up to the lofty expectations of the Tottenham Hotspur faithful, with injuries and suspensions playing big roles. No matter how good a defender he is, the Argentinean has hardly featured for Ange Postecoglou’s side this season.
Due to injury problems, Romero has spent large chunks of the campaign on the sidelines. Thus, it looks very difficult for any club to splash around £80million for the Cordoba-born star’s services in the summer. If we are fortunate and receive an offer of around £80m, the Hotspur Way chiefs must sell Romero without any second thoughts.

Tottenham lodged a sensational bid for Marc Guehi during the past January transfer window but Crystal Palace rejected it right away. However, Fabrizio Romano claims the Lilywhites are planning to go again for Guehi in the summer, which is sensible as the England international possesses the qualities to become Romero’s fantastic long-term replacement.
