Tottenham keen on AS Roma veteran to reinforce defensive roster

Tottenham are planning to raid Italian market by signing AS Roma star

Tottenham are planning to sign AS Roma star Gianluca Mancini in June

Tottenham Hotspur may look to bring in multiple young talents next summer, as they also have an opportunity to make Mathys Tel’s move permanent from Bayern Munich after the end of the season.

Kevin Danso also joined Spurs during the winter transfer window, signing on loan from French side RC Lens with an obligation to buy in the summer. The Austrian defender was attracted to join the “amazing project” at Tottenham after hearing of their interest and has expressed his desire to win trophies at White Hart Lane.

While the Lilywhites’ winter transfer window ended on a positive note, the Hotspur Way chiefs are not resting on their laurels and have started working behind the scenes for the next window. And it looks like they are targeting defensive reinforcements as a priority ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.

According to a report from Italian outlet Roma Forever, Tottenham have set their sights on AS Roma defender Gianluca Mancini and are planning to welcome him to White Hart Lane as early as June. They are ready to spend around €18million in transfer fees and offer him a salary of around €3million per season to lure the defender to North London.

Gianluca Mancini has been a part of AS Roma since joining from Atalanta back in 2019. He has gone onto rack up 258 appearances for the Giallorossi, netting an impressive 17 goals. The Italy international has made 25 Serie A appearances this season thus far, scoring a goal.

Mancini will complete six years at Roma and is seemingly attached to the fans and the city. As a result, the aforementioned report adds the Pontedera-born talent may not be happy about a possible switch to Tottenham in the summer, although we will have to wait until June to see if the negotiations between the two clubs proceed.

Gianluca Mancini has been a consistent performer for AS Roma over the years

Spurs have endured an injury crisis this season, with the defensive positions being hit the most. Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero have been on the sidelines since early December, and the duo’s absence have been largely felt. Ben Davies also spent a month out with a hamstring problem, while Radu Dragusin has been ruled out for the rest of the season with an ACL rupture.

Therefore, it doesn’t come as a surprise that the club bosses are prioritising defensive reinforcements. And in that regard, Mancini would be an astute signing. He may have not played outside Italy but Mancini has been a reliable performer for AS Roma over the years. Capable of functioning as a right-sided centre-back in a back three and as a No.6, the ex-Atalanta man would enhance Tottenham’s defensive unit and bring some much-needed physicality.

The North Londoners have found great success in raiding the Italian market in recent years, and they could build on that with Mancini’s acquisition from Roma.
