Leeds United are eyeing a move for Tottenham Hotspur defender Ben Davies on a free transfer
Championship leaders Leeds United were keen on signing Tottenham Hotspur defender Ben Davies during the past transfer window. However, a deal didn’t materialise as Ange Postecoglou was not in a position to sanction his departure amid a chronic defensive crisis.
Spurs have been without first-choice centre-backs Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven for large parts of this season. Ben Davies was also out for over a month due to a hamstring injury, forcing Ange Postecoglou to use young Archie Gray as a makeshift centre-back.

While Romero and Van de Ven still remain out, Davies’ return from injury coupled with the January acquisition of Kevin Danso has eased the problems at the back. Davies has been a reliable performer for Spurs since arriving from Swansea City. The veteran Wales international is in his eleventh season at the North London club, having made over 348 appearances for them in that time.
However, the defender is also in the final six months of his current Spurs contract, leaving the door wide open for an exit.
Leeds United still have 13 games left to play in this Championship season, but with a seven-point gap over third-place Burnley, attention is slowly turning towards next season. According to a report from TEAMtalk, the Whites remain interested in signing Davies on a potential free transfer from Tottenham this summer.
Daniel Farke’s side are enjoying an incredible season in the Championship and are the current favourites to win the title and secure promotion to the Premier League. The Leeds boss admires Davies, especially due to his ability to operate both as a left-back and centre-back. Also, the Tottenham star’s valuable top-flight experience could come in handy for the Peacocks in their bid to maintain top-flight status should they achieve promotion.

Davies will have turned 32 by the time his contract at White Hart Lane expires. The Welshman has been a great servant to Tottenham for over a decade, impressing with his reliability, leadership and nous under every manager.

With the Neath-born talent entering the twilight of his career, combined with the Lilywhites requiring a complete overhaul in defence, it makes sense for the club to start afresh and release Davies at the end of the season. That said, Postecoglou should target a younger and versatile profile to replace the experienced Welshman at N17 next season.
