Tottenham Hotspur have stepped up their pursuit of signing Angel Gomes on a free transfer from Lille

The recently concluded January transfer window was more about misses and near-misses than the players that joined Tottenham Hotspur, and among those failed opportunities was a certain LOSC Lille midfielder.

Spurs were keen on signing Angel Gomes following his eye-catching performances for LOSC Lille in recent years. The diminutive creative midfielder has been putting in some impressive displays in Ligue 1 that have drawn attention from multiple sides, including the Lilywhites.

In fact, Tottenham honcho Daniel Levy made it a personal mission to get a deal done for the 24-year-old in the past winter transfer window. However, a move did not transpire and eventually, Gomes stayed put at Lille to run down his contract which expires at the end of June.

However, according to an exclusive report from TBR Football, Tottenham are stepping up efforts to sign Gomes on a free transfer from Lille at the end of the season. There are unsurprisingly a lot of suitors for the England international but Spurs are trying to position themselves at the front of the queue, with Levy personally trying his best to lure him to White Hart Lane.

As there are less than six months left in his contract at Lille and with no desire to renew, Gomes is considering his options and a return to England looks very much on the cards. The player, who has made 133 appearances for the Ligue 1 side, has offers from different European leagues.

The aforementioned report adds Spurs have made an offer too as they look to push for the deep-lying playmaker’s signature.

A possible move to White Hart Lane—if it does amount—Tottenham will be getting a player who is not only apt technically but also has the ability to contribute with goals and assists. Gomes is someone who can dictate the tempo of play from the middle of the park with much-needed composure and control for years to come.

Watching this from the perspective of the ex-Manchester United talent, the prospect of moving to a prestigious club like Tottenham is undoubtedly appealing, especially given how Ange Postecoglou has been nurturing young talent and giving them a platform to develop.

At 24, Gomes is at the right age to test himself in the Premier League and a move to Big Ange’s side could just be perfect for his development. Also, the Edmonton-born talent’s ability to operate in multiple roles, from a central playmaker to a more advanced attacking midfielder, will add massive tactical flexibility to the Australian’s side.
