Tottenham midfielder Lucas Bergvall has enjoyed a promising debut season in English football
Tottenham Hotspur have witnessed a tough second season under Ange Postecoglou. An unprecedented injury situation and poor league form have left them in the bottom half of the Premier League table.
Spurs had a chance to salvage the season by winning the domestic cups, but within a week, they were eliminated from both the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup earlier this month. This means Ange Postecoglou’s side are only alive in the Europa League, where they face AZ Alkmaar in the last 16 in March.
However, regardless of the chaos, there have been a few bright spots. The development of young talents such as Lucas Bergvall, Archie Gray, Mikey Moore and Djed Spence are one of the positives in a gloomy, injury-hit 2024/25 season.
Lucas Bergvall, in particular, has grown in his role after a tough opening couple of months to his Tottenham career. The teenage prodigy has stepped up and taken responsibility in the absence of key stars.

The central midfielder has made six Premier League starts this season, and a further 12 appearances have come from the bench. He has featured heavily in the Europa League, clocking six starts. Lucas Bergvall has put in some impressive displays, including the 1-0 win over Manchester United at home last Sunday.
Speaking ahead of Tottenham’s away clash against Ipswich Town on Saturday, Ange Postecoglou has now revealed that the club were close to loaning out Bergvall. When asked whether he trusted young talents Lucas, Archie and Djed, the Spurs boss told Football London:
“Yeah, I’m not sure about trust. I mean, I really thought that guys like Lucas and Archie could definitely contribute.
“That’s why we kept them. We made a decision because there was an option, particularly with Lucas, to loan him out and I really felt working through pre-season that Archie and Lucas could definitely contribute to us.”

Tottenham beat 23 clubs including the likes of Arsenal, Manchester United and Barcelona to the signing of Bergvall from Swedish side IF Djurgardens last February. After spending the rest of the 2023/24 season on loan with Djurgardens, he officially arrived at White Hart Lane in July 2024.
The teenager was given opportunities on the pre-season tour of Asia and he performed well. This perhaps promoted Big Ange to keep Bergvall in his squad and not loan him out. And the decision seems to have paid rich dividends. Indeed, the Sweden international has contributed well to Tottenham in his first season. The midfielder from Stockholm has bagged a goal and three assists in 32 appearances across all competitions.

It is clear that Big Ange has given Bergvall a lot of confidence, providing him with the license to express himself freely and grow amid the injury crisis. The Swede has taken his chances with both hands, making it difficult for the boss to now leave him out of the squad. All in all, the player’s trajectory only looks to be up at N17.
