Ange Postecoglou reveals ‘opportunity’ as Tottenham eye strong end to the season

Tottenham have a great opportunity to beat Ipswich Town on Saturday and string three Premier League wins on the bounce

Tottenham Hotspur will be hoping to make it three wins on the bounce for the first time this season in the Premier League when they travel to Portman Road to face Ipswich Town on Saturday.

The Lilywhites suffered elimination from back-to-back domestic cup competitions earlier this month which had put Ange Postecoglou under a lot of fire. He needed a response from his boys on Sunday against Manchester United and got that, with Spurs winning 1-0 and completing a league double over the Red Devils.

The victory saw them rise to 12th in the table, and with five players returning from injuries last weekend, confidence within the Tottenham camp should be high ahead of the trip to East Angelia. On paper, Ange Postecoglou’s side are favourites to win Saturday’s contest. However, football is not played on paper and the Greek-Aussie tactician will not be getting ahead of himself whatsoever, having been shocked by the Tractor Boys 2-1 in the reverse fixture back in November.

Yet, the weekend fixture presents a glorious opportunity for Spurs to build some momentum after injuries over the last three months have ruined the season.

Postecoglou faced the media on Friday afternoon ahead of the game. When asked how big an opportunity it is for Tottenham to win and get some consistency in the belt, he stated (h/t Football London).

“Yeah, that’s the opportunity that does exist. Obviously our last two Premier League games, Brentford away and Man Utd at home, have been two important results for us to kind of try and arrest the form in the league. But you need to keep doing that and backing that up.

“And tomorrow’s an opportunity to do that. It’s not easy when you’re playing away from home and in the Premier League, especially against a team that’s fighting like Ipswich are. So, we know it’s not going to be an easy one, but it is an opportunity for us now to get another strong performance, get another positive result, and like I said, hopefully provide a bit of a foundation for us to kick on.”

James Maddison made an early return from injury last weekend and scored the winner against Man United, while Guglielmo Vicario played his first game after more than two months on the sidelines and kept a clean sheet. Brennan Johnson and Wilson Odobert got minutes off the bench, and Destiny Udogie was an unused substitute.

Given Tottenham are now nearing full strength, Big Ange and Co. should be expected to beat relegation-battling Ipswich. For the first time in a long time, Postecoglou now faces less selection dilemma across the pitch, with a number of injured players now back fit.

On Saturday, Tottenham truly have a great opportunity to avenge November’s setback and string three league wins on the trot, even though Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson thinks the contest at Portman Road will end up in a draw.
