Alasdair Gold says Tottenham believe Djed Spence can become one of the best full-backs around in the Premier League

Tottenham Hotspur have endured a difficult season which currently sees them in the bottom half of the Premier League table.

Having been eliminated from both domestic cup competitions, the only way possible for Spurs to salvage the season and qualify for the Champions League is by winning the Europa League. They face Dutch side AZ Alkmaar in the last 16 of the Europa League, with many predicting the North Londoners as one of the favourites to win this competition.

In the Premier League, though, there has been some kind of positivity of late. Ange Postecoglou’s side have won each of their last three league games, and some of his players are emerging as consistent performers.

Djed Spence has earned big plaudits for his eye-catching displays of late. The full-back has rejuvenated his Tottenham career after being frozen out by Ange Postecoglou during the early parts of this campaign. There was frustration among the White Hart faithful due to Postecoglou’s unwillingness to consider him at the start of the season.

The Greek-Australian tactician revealed earlier this month that he purposely made it difficult for Djed Spence during the early part of the season to test his character and hunger and praised him for the way he responded. It would not be a stretch to say that the 24-year-old has been Spurs’ best player over recent months, with BBC Sport pundit Gary Lineker tipping Spence to make the England squad for the forthcoming 2026 World Cup Qualifiers.

Speaking on the Gold and Guest Talk Tottenham Podcast, Football London journalist Alasdair Gold claims the view at Tottenham with regards to Spence has now completely changed. There is a belief within the club that the former England youth international has the potential to become one of the best full-backs around in the Premier League.

“It’s so important in that system as well. I feel like, from what I understand, there’s a real belief that now, if he keeps pushing on from within the club, there’s this belief that he could be one of the best fullbacks around in the Premier League especially, because he’s got everything in his game. But if you can train him up on all the defensive aspects and concentration aspects and everything as well, he could be such an all-rounder,” Alasdair Gold told on the Gold and Guest Talk Tottenham Podcast.

“He’s like a scary talent. What I would say, if I’m going to have any slight… I don’t even think it’s criticism, but it’s just kind of pointing out, I didn’t actually think he looked as good on the right as he does on the left, weirdly.”

Djed Spence has been afforded opportunities thanks to injuries to the Tottenham defensive roster.

Spence got his opportunities during Tottenham’s injury crisis, and he has not looked back since, delivering multiple Man of the Match performances. The full-back has emerged as the club’s most reliable player, which is a huge turnaround by a player who shipped out on loan twice last season and appeared to have no future at N17.

He is now among the first names on Big Ange’s teamsheet, and at 24, the former Nottingham Forest man still has a lot more room to grow. There is a belief within the club that Spence will be a top defender with more regular game time and exposure at the highest level.

At this moment, it is difficult to see a Tottenham starting XI without Spence.
