Tottenham identify La Liga star who could replace Yves Bissouma at N-17

Tottenham considering move for Real Betis star Johnny Cardoso as a potential replacement for Yves Bissouma

Tottenham Hotspur are considering listening to offers for one of the senior stars in the squad amidst his struggle for consistency this season.

The North Londoners have had to deal with an unprecedented injury situation this season and, in the absence of several key players, Ange Postecoglou would have expected many of his senior stars to step up and help them navigate through the crisis. One of those who had an opportunity to shine and nail down his place in the XI was Yves Bissouma.

Yves Bissouma has failed to live up to his potential at Tottenham since arriving from Brighton and Hove Albion back in 2022. The Mali international has struggled to maintain the standards and consistency levels at White Hart Lane—both on and off the pitch. And as he enters the final year of his ongoing deal, the club chiefs are exploring the possibility of cashing him in when the transfer window reopens.

According to an exclusive report from GIVEMESPORT, Spurs have formulated a five-man shortlist to replace Bissouma. Real Betis’ Johnny Cardoso is one of the names being considered by the Lilywhites.

Spurs agreed a priority option with Real Betis to land Johnny Cardoso as part of the deal that took Argentinean midfielder Giovani Lo Celso to La Liga last summer. As the defensive midfielder impressed during the first six months at Real Betis, Tottenham moved to secure a first option on him at a pre-agreed price of £21 million.

Now, the pre-agreed price of £21 million could hugely benefit Ange Postecoglou’s club. The USA international has made 30 appearances across all competitions thus far—including 18 in La Liga. He has become a mainstay at the heart of Betis’ midfield of late, completing 90 minutes in eight of the last nine La Liga fixtures.

Cardoso’s solid performances have resulted in the Hotspur Way chiefs viewing him as a potential replacement for Bissouma. Due to a pre-agreed price with Betis, the North London side have the advantage over the counterparts for the 23-year-old’s signature, with Aston Villa among the interested parties.

More Tottenham Hotspur News:

There is no doubt that Spurs do need reinforcements in the middle of the park this summer. Signing another combative and ball-playing number six would enhance Big Ange’s squad, especially given Bissouma’s struggles in this system. Cardoso, in that regard, has the attributes to operate as a holding midfielder and dictate the pace of the game in Big Ange’s system. He would also bring balance to the side, which has been lacking at times this term.

We have seen enough evidence over a season with Betis that the USA star has the makings of a top player. Thus, the club chiefs must not hesitate to trigger Cardoso’s clause and get his signature in June.
