Tottenham uncertain of finalising deal for 24-year-old English star

Tottenham officials not confident about the prospect of landing Crystal Palace star Marc Guehi this summer

Tottenham Hotspur are expected to be in the mix for the signing of Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi

Tottenham Hotspur were among the busiest clubs in the Premier League during the January transfer window, bringing in three new faces at N17. In Antonin Kinsky, Mathys Tel and Kevin Danso, Spurs made three exciting signings to back Ange Postecoglou after his side had been stretched due to persistent injury problems.

The Lilywhites’ defensive areas of the pitch have been hit the most this season, with first-choice centre-backs Cristian Romero and Micky Van de Ven, along with No.1 goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, spending months on the sidelines. Above all, Radu Dragusin has been ruled out for the rest of the season after sustaining an ACL injury in January.

In the wake of Dragusin’s season-ending injury, Spurs brought in Danso on loan from RC Lens with an obligation to buy at the end of the season. However, before the Austrian’s acquisition, the club made an audacious attempt to sign Crystal Palace skipper Marc Guehi by tabling a shock £70m offer.

But the Eagles immediately rejected that offer as they didn’t want to sell their 24-year-old defensive lynchpin midway through the campaign. This was perhaps because either they were not satisfied with Spurs’ offer or had very little time to identify a replacement.

Tottenham are seemingly planning to revive their interest in Marc Guehi. However, according to an exclusive report from GIVEMESPORT, the North London club are not confident that they will be able to get a deal for the Crystal Palace captain done. They acknowledge internally that signing Guehi will be difficult.

Spurs are expected to be right in the centre of speculation for a move involving the England international, who has established himself as one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League in recent years. While the Hotspur Way bosses may not feel confident about signing Guehi, perhaps due to increased competition with Premier League rivals Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool all showing interest in him, one cannot ignore the fact that Ange Postecoglou needs defensive reinforcements ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

This is because Romero and Van de Ven simply cannot be relied upon, especially the latter, following their injury-ravaged seasons. Plus, Dragusin is expected to be out for the best part of 2025 as all eyes will be on his rehab from a serious knee injury, while Ben Davies is out of contract at the end of the season.

Clearly, Big Ange lacks depth as far as his centre-back department is concerned, making it imperative to bring in a quality player, someone in the mould of Guehi. However, it appears Tottenham face an uphill battle to land the ex-Chelsea starlet, which could compel them to look for alternative options when the transfer window reopens.
