TTLB Opinion: Have Tottenham not learned their lesson yet? – Why Spurs should not move for another Chelsea reject

Harry Redknapp thinks Ange Postecoglou is under pressure at Tottenham Hotspur.

There has been an increasing need for creativity and flair in the midfield at White Hart Lane with Ange Postecoglou continually looking outward to bring in a talent who can make an impact and bring that moment of magic into the roster at N17, and that’s exactly where the links to Joao Felix make sense. Felix has always been one of those silky players who looks magical when he runs with the ball at his feet and creates those slick moments that leave the supporters in awe.

Daniel Levy explored a move to bring the former Atletico Madrid maestro to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the recently concluded winter transfer window, but while the club chairman explored a move for the Portuguese international, he sealed a loan deal to AC Milan.

Joao Felix & life in Serie A

Initially, things pointed to a possible loan to a permanent transfer, given how he started life at San Siro on a high. He started being the Felix from Benfica, one that is dazzling with the ball and making things happen. But soon those performances stopped, and now a permanent move to his current temporary employer looks highly unlikely, per Corriere dello Sport, as relayed by Sport Witness.

This is where Tottenham come in…

There is a possibility that the North Londoners could be looking to reignite their interest in signing the 25-year-old when the summer window comes around, but is that a mistake? Haven’t Tottenham learnt their lesson yet?

The Lilywhites supporters have just seen Timo Werner enduring a challenging loan spell at N17, which raises questions about the potential success of signing another Chelsea reject in Joao Felix.

Werner was brought in with a reputation for speed and goal-scoring from Germany, but his current spell donning the Spurs badge has seen him put in some consistent, underwhelming performances. And the pundits as well as supporters have expressed huge frustration with his presence at Tottenham as the club has reportedly gone against exercising their £8.5 million option to bring the former Chelsea star on a permanent deal, which in turn signals a disappointing end to his stint at Hotspur Way.

Now you can easily draw parallels between Werner and Felix; both had struggled to adapt to the pace and physicality of English football during their time in West London and have been subsequently reduced to a bench role before being shipped off.

Wait there is more… Felix is already a ‘disaster’ in Serie A

Moreover, you can also draw lines to Felix’s recent loan move to AC Milan from Chelsea, where despite a promising debut, his performances have dropped massively, which has seen high criticism from the media coming his way, one labelling him a “disaster” while highlighting how he lacks the ability to make an impact on the pitch, while reports also suggest that his teammates at San Siro are hesitant to involve him in play, showing his troubles to settle in at life in Serie A.

To put things into perspective, Felix does possess exceptional technical abilities, but his adaptability and consistency are a thing of concern, very much like with Werner. And Tottenham’s experience with Werner should serve as a caution in investing in a player who may end up struggling despite his individual quality.
