TTLB Opinion: Is it time for Tottenham to cash in on £25million signing?

Tottenham Hotspur edging closer to signing Real Betis star Johnny Cardoso.

There has been a lot of discussion among the Tottenham Hotspur supporters around Yves Bissouma and whether he should be given another season at N17 or rather let his services be redeemed by potential suitors when the summer transfer window comes around.

Inconsistent time at N17 as he struggles to come terms with Postecoglou-ball

Bissouma stays put as Spurs see a role for the midfielder despite inconsistency
Bissouma can leave Spurs with inconsistent displays

The Malian international moved to London in 2022 in a highly anticipated £25m transfer, and his time donning the Lilywhites badge has been filled with inconsistencies and injuries as he has struggled to replicate his performances at Brighton, which led Daniel Levy to fork out the investment for his transfer. But playing in the current system that Ange Postecoglou has deployed at Hotspur Way, the midfielders have to be mobile and aware of the vertical passes while being a physical presence when on the back feet, and while Bissouma has attributes to display all of the skill set, he has not been able to do so, and that has shown in the games he has featured in for Spurs. Yves has only started 12 games in the Premier League all season.

There is more; just sticking to the ongoing campaign, Bissouma has appeared to be a liability in the midfield with a lack of pressing, ball retention, and tactical discipline, and we have seen him make some high-profile errors, such as his mistake against Liverpool when Spurs were thumped 4-0 with pundits like Jamie Carragher and Paul Merson criticising the Malian, insisting that he lacks the reliability required for a top-tier side.

It has to come down to Benta or Bissouma, and it’s clear…

Tottenham Hotspur have been looking to extend Bentancur’s contract

Now if you also compare direct numbers with peers, he doesn’t come out on top. When you compare his numbers to teammate Rodrigo Bentancur’s (nine goals, eight assists in 98 games), he doesn’t come close (two goals, 88 appearances).

The 28-year-old has been tied with Tottenham till 2026, and as per the recent reports, the Lilywhites seem to be prioritising contract renewal for Uruguayan midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur, and with one experienced foe in talks for a new deal complemented by having the likes of Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall rising through the ranks, Bissouma’s presence in the dressing room appears increasingly delicate.

Crunch talks ahead as suitors lineup

Will Bissouma be sold amid midfield overhaul?

And the 28-year-old is set to hold crunch talks leading to his potential N17 exit when the off-season comes around, per Football Insider. And all the talks are expected to lead to one place: curtains to his time at Tottenham.

Daniel Levy will have to be willing to take a loss on selling Bissouma as the likes of Crystal Palace, Marseille, and Nice express interest in signing him. And now for Tottenham, they have already moved into the market looking for potential upgrades, with the likes of Real Betis’ Johnny Cardoso (with a £21 million buy option that the Lilywhites hold), Adam Wharton (Crystal Palace), and Hugo Larsson (Eintracht Frankfurt) being eyed by the club.

Tottenham have been pushing to bring in a new midfielder and conduct a midfield overhaul for a while, and now it looks like it’s time—time for Daniel Levy to put money where his mouth is and get high-potential players in that squad.
