Tottenham has seen quite an irregular season in which they haven’t played to their usual standards and even fell to as low as 13th in the table. Breaking into the top 10 now appears to be a big hurdle for the Lilywhite’s. It cannot all be blamed on the Australian, however, for Spurs have been severely affected by injuries disrupting their progress. Club legend Rafael van der Vaart has spoken, exposing what is wrong with the Spurs and how to correct this.

Tottenham Hotspur’s season has not gone to plan, as they sit in the Premier League’s lower reaches and have been knocked out of both domestic cup competitions.

Injuries have hit Tottenham badly but with some key players coming back into the squad, form has surely begun to improve. The Spurs also have a glimmer of hope when it comes to the Europa League. Winning the competition-a way to end their 2008 trophy drought-will certainly be tempting.

Rafael van der Vaart urges Tottenham to stop overspending on average players

Having played a bit at Real Madrid, the midfielder enjoyed a very productive spell at Tottenham Hotspur during which he contributed to an astonishing total of 46 goals. Van der Vaart has since shared that Spurs must stop throwing away money on such ordinary players. According to him, Tottenham should only strive to pay for the players who will take the team to a higher level.

Speaking on TalkSport, Van der Vaart pointed to some difficulty that Tottenham has in that final step toward being considered an elite club. He talked about how much brighter the future looks now than in his day, with a great stadium and facilities to boot, in comparison to when they trained at Chigwell and played their games at White Hart Lane, an atmosphere he still considers the greatest he has ever played in.

He also blasted Spurs’ recruitment policy, saying they have been overpaying for too many mediocre players rather than investing in a few high-quality signings. The Dutchman suggests that Tottenham must focus on going for top-quality players instead of overspending for players who don’t really make a difference.

Tottenham’s recruitment activity, in recent years, has been rather erratic-but there are causes to be hopeful under Postecoglou. Atthe very least, Pedro Porro, Micky van de Ven, Archie Gray, Lucas Bergvall, and Dejan Kulusevski present great reasons for satisfaction, while others have still to prove their worth. Admittedly, Timo Werner neverreally made his mark, but most of the other signings have shown themselves promising. Spurs may be finally turning the corner in their transfer strategy with Postecoglou’s strong track record in the market.
