TTLB Opinion: Making sense of why Tottenham want to sign Viktoria Plzen star

published :

The North Londoners have been looking to bring in highly rated young talents to N17 in the upcoming summer transfer window, and they have been aiding a move for a surprise target in Pavel Sulc. Daniel Levy has been stretching his scouting depth, and he has been landing on underrated talents, and this is where Viktoria Plzen midfielder comes in…

Need for a new creative outlet

If you look at this Ange Postecoglou side, they have been craving goals from the middle of the park given how James Maddison has barely been in goals and Lucas Bergvall is still finding his feet in senior football. And we have seen implications of this massively in the ongoing season, given how the North Londoners have struggled to find solutions and have difficulty breaking defences.

And this is where the need for a creative outlet comes in…

What will Sulc bring to Tottenham

Why do Tottenham want Sulc?

Bringing in Sulc will directly solve a problem of getting those goal contributions from the midfield, given that the Czech Republic midfielder has a tally of 22 goals and 8 assists in 2023/24 complemented by another 12 goals alongside 11 assists in the ongoing campaign.

But why the goals? They are no fluke; he has combined his ability to clinically finish with composure when exposed to 1v1 situations. And he has a knack for making late runs into the box, which are not only difficult to pick but also precisely timed.

And you can put him in an 8 as well as a 10 role, so the Australian head coach can push him at 8 in his system given how he likes to play a 4-3-3 with hard-working midfield. Speaking about hard work, Sulc is someone who contributes defensively, and his press resistance means he can drive solutions in stale as well as transition situations.

The only concern would be if he can adapt to the pacey and physical demands of Ange Postecoglou’s system (and of the English top tier).

He can be used as a depth option for James Maddison and possibly transition from the former Foxes midfielder and take on the first team role in a season or two.

Now talking about the costing, he would be a low-risk, high-potential option given his €8m value (Transfermarkt). But it won’t be easy for the North Londoners to sign him with the likes of Manchester City, Aston Villa, and Napoli also interested in the signature.

For Tottenham, this is one of those signings that could elevate their transfer kitty, and it’s these transfers that can help them leapfrog the other clubs that spend crazy money. We have seen Levy operate smartly with transfers, a bit underrated moves like Lucas Bergvall that have the capacity to serve the club for years to come while also providing immediate value—and Sulc comes in as another transfer that has the potential to take the English top tier by storm for a fee that could end up being a bargain.
