Tottenham keen on re-signing Sunderland left-back Dennis Cirkin but face competition from several Premier League clubs

Tottenham Hotspur’s season has fallen short of expectations, with inconsistent displays leaving them in the bottom half of the table and out of the domestic cup competitions. Ange Postecoglou’s side only have the Europa League to salvage their sorry season.

The Greek-Australian tactician has overseen an injury-ravaged campaign in his second year at White Hart Lane. With players constantly getting injured, it hampered the routines and team chemistry, which has led to substandard performances.

Spurs have the foundations of a very good squad and boast of many players in their ranks, but they lack depth in certain areas of the pitch. The defence has been an area of concern, with key first-teamers dropping out owing to injury problems and exposing the lack of depth. The Hotspur Way chiefs are now seemingly planning to add to the defensive unit in the summer.

Cirkin is now a Sunderland player.
Dennis Cirkin has grown in stature at Sunderland

According to an exclusive report from TBR Football, Tottenham are among several clubs monitoring Sunderland full-back Dennis Cirkin.

A product of the Tottenham academy, Dennis Cirkin left the North Londoners in 2021 without making a single appearance. The full-back has impressed one and all with his performance for Sunderland, ever since making the move from Spurs. He is now considered one of the best full-backs in the Championship.

With three goals and two assists in 31 appearances to his name this season, he has played a key role in the Black Cats’ push for top-flight promotion. Thus, the former England youth international has caught the attention of many clubs. However, Cirkin will enter the final year of his contract at the Stadium of Light in June (Transfermarkt), which has put many clubs on red alert.

The aforementioned report adds Spurs have kept a close eye on Cirkin’s development ever since he left the club almost four years ago. They would be interested in re-signing him but could face competition from Chelsea, Crystal Palace, West Ham United, Everton and Leeds United for the full-back’s signature.

Dennis Cirkin would be a good long-term replacement for Ben Davies

Cirkin, who can also deputise in central defence when required, is contracted to Sunderland until 2026. This means the Englishman might not cost Spurs a bomb considering he doesn’t have much time left on his current deal. Tottenham had a £6m buy-back clause valid until 30 June 2024, so they will have to negotiate separately if Postecoglou wants him in his defensive roster next term.

As Ben Davies will become a free agent at the end of the season, Tottenham would be wise to replace the veteran Welshman with Cirkin. If he arrives from Sunderland, the Dublin-born talent would be a smart option to compete with Destiny Udogie next season. All in all, the Sunderland star would add a lot of value to Big Ange’s squad and Spurs must not hesitate to re-sign him.
