Tottenham Hotspur urged to offer Cristian Romero a new contract amid interest from Real Madrid.

Tottenham defender Cristian Romero returned to the matchday squad for the first time since December

Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero has had a stop-start season under his belt. The Argentina international made his first appearance since December for Spurs in the club’s 2-2 draw against Bournemouth on Sunday.

Romero has been a key player for the North London club ever since arriving from Atalanta in 2021. The 26-year-old defender has been a consistent performer for Ange Postecoglou’s side and has been relied upon heavily by the Australian manager.

Tottenham defender Cristian Romero featured against Bournemouth in the Premier League

However, this season the World Cup winner has played just 15 matches for the Lilywhites in all competitions, after suffering several injuries. He has been on the sidelines for most parts of the season and has had to watch Spurs fall to the bottom half of the Premier League table.

The Argentina international looked a little rusty in his first game back against Bournemouth. The Spurs No.17 lost the ball in the first minute of the game and keeper Vicario had to make a wonderful save to spare his blushes. However, after that, the defender seemed to be getting into the rhythm of the game and was substituted with an hour under his belt.

Romero posts a cryptic message following his recovery

Cristian Romero had been out with an injury since December and it was quite clear that Spurs’ defence lacked his presence and leadership. However, the 25-year-old has now returned from injury and also featured in the 2-2 draw against Bournemouth on Sunday.

As per Sofascore, the defender completed 37 of his 50 attempted passes and won four of the five ground duels he contested for. Romero also had 55 touches of the ball and made two clearances before being substituted after an hour under his belt.

Romero took to social media to thank the medical team for getting him back to full fitness. But it wasn’t the medical team of Tottenham Hotspur that he thanked. The ex-Atalanta defender went on to showcase his gratitude for the medical team of the Argentina National Team.

The Spurs defender posted on X saying,

“Thankful to the physios at Argentina for getting me out of a bad moment and putting me back on the field where I am so happy. Thank you all for your continued support. After a difficult period, full of things that happened in between, I am back with the group and happy to be able to help the team.”

The defender added,

“There is certainly a lot to correct and work on, but we are together and eager to reverse this situation. See you on Thursday, we will come back stronger than ever, all together.”

It can be said that this message will not be going down particularly well at Spurs and questions will be asked about why the defender did not thank the club’s medical team. Tottenham’s medical team have been working overtime this season due to several injuries that the first team has had to face. So, to not get acknowledged by Romero will surely be a sting in the heart.
