TTLB Opinion: Will resurgent Tottenham star get into Thomas Tuchel’s England squad?

published :

Tottenham Hotspur fullback Djed Spence has been under a massive spotlight given how there is a possibility that he gets into Thomas Tuchel’s first England squad that is set to be announced soon and given how he has shown the mentality and grit to turn things around at N17 complemented by his consistent performances for Spurs this season—he has made a case and a half for himself to get into that Three Lions squad.

Beaming excitement at N17

Djed Spence has been impressive in the ongoing season

England are set to face Albania and Latvia for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers, and it is a squad that has been highly anticipated by the supporters since Ange Postecoglou took over the reins for Wembley Stadium. And given how Spence has shown the capacity of being a highly athletic fullback who can play on both flanks while not only adding an offensive dynamic but also a defensive presence, former England striker Gary Lineker has tipped Spence’s chances of making the squad.

And there is a lot of anticipation and excitement among Tottenham supporters as well, given they await an announcement that will see a complete turnaround from unwanted to celebrated.

Djed Spence is not alone

But as we wait for the squad to be named, let’s go across the competition that Spence will face for his spot in the Three Lions squad.

The first one would be Newcastle United’s Lewis Hall. Hall has been playing some impressive football with the Toon, where he has time and again shown his technical capacities, but he suffered an unfortunate foot injury, which can end up potentially opening the door for Spence.

Then comes in Hale End academy graduate Myles Lewis-Skelly, who has made a significant impact at Arsenal this season while playing in the inverted left back role. And while he is originally a midfielder, he has shown the zonal understanding in Mikel Arteta’s system that could push Tuchel to consider the teenager for a possible call-up.

Djed Spence is ‘looking forward’

Djed Spence is looking forward to be named in England squad.

For Djed Spence, he has been looking forward to the potential of having that England cap as much as the North Londoners supporters. He has admitted that he is ‘looking forward’ to the possibility of being named in the Three Lions squad, but while saying that, he also ensured that if he is being overlooked, he will keep working hard and play like he is doing at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Speaking with Football.London, Spence said:

“Who doesn’t want to play for their country? That’s something I’m looking forward to. If I get called up, happy days, if I don’t, I’ll just keep working hard. I haven’t heard from anyone. I’m just focusing on right now, I just want to keep playing well and help the team to win games.”

A bit of facts…

In my opinion, given how Djed Spence has been playing of late, he does have a strong chance of being included in the England squad, and his success goes beyond skill set (as earlier stated in the article); he has shown resilience and determination to succeed that not many have this season, and the fact that he has not only adapted to different roles at N17 so well under pressure but also has found a way to become a key player for Postecoglou speaks volumes. And then if you see, given the injury to Hall, Spence would be a perfect option given you also add his ability to play on both sides.

While it also depends on how Tuchel wants to use his full backs, if he is thinking of an inverted midfield role, then Skelly leapfrogs Hall and Spence without a doubt, but if Tuchel wants some athleticism and flank presence in the attack, then Spence has a chance.
