TTLB Opinion: Former Tottenham boss wants to steal this Serie A star from under Levy’s nose, but should Spurs let their target join rivals?

There has been a widespread understanding that Tottenham Hotspur needs a new midfielder, and everyone supposedly knows this except Daniel Levy. On a fair note to the club chairman, he did try to pursue a few in the winter transfer window, but none of those transfers materialised, and now the Lilywhites will be pushing to fill in similar cracks in the roster when the summer window comes around, and one of the players that the North Londoners would be looking at is Inter Milan midfielder Davide Frattesi.

Nottingham to compete with Tottenham for Davide Frattesi

Nuno Espirito Santo wants Tottenham target at Nottingham.

Spurs did try to bring him to N17 in the January window; however, any possible prospects for a move to sign the 25-year-old were delayed, and that was followed by the fact that Tottenham signed no one in the middle of the park. This means the Lilywhites could be in the race to sign Frattesi in the off-season.

However, any move to bring him through the doors at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium won’t be easy with the race for his signature heating up as we draw closer to the summer transfer window, and now former North Londoners boss Nuno Espírito Santo wants to sign the player from under Daniel Levy’s nose as he looks to sign Frattesi at Nottingham Forest. And in order to boost their pursuit of landing the 25-year-old, Nottingham are considering a swap deal that would involve Nicolas Dominguez plus a fee, per InterLive.

His exposure at Inter and how Davide Frattesi could be ideal for Tottenham

Why Davide Frattesi?

Given how the 25-year-old has had a lack of playing time in terms of starting games at Inter Milan, this dissatisfaction could lead to a potential exit in the summer window. But don’t judge his antics by the number of games started; his contributions at San Siro cannot be overlooked. He has showcased his tactical awareness and positional discipline time and time again, with the Serie A giants often relying on him to close out games. He has been rubbing shoulders and competing with the likes of Hakan Çalhanoğlu and Nicolo Barella, and that is in a structured system, which shows his ability to make a genuine impact. And we have seen him playing in high-pressure situations where he has shown his ability to read the situation at hand and stabilise the pace of the game to ensure that they can close out the games.

Now, if you look at the current North Londoners squad, Ange Postecoglou is lacking this tactical discipline with the likes of Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr, who have continually struggled to put in consistent performances, especially in a disciplined midfield setup. Then you look at his ability to feature in a central midfield role as well as slightly higher up the pitch, which makes him an attractive option for the Australian head coach, who likes his midfielders to operate a certain way. The former Celtic manager likes his players to keep on their flanks and position themselves smartly off the ball while rushing into spaces exposed in transitions while playing those between-the-line passes on the ball, and in Frattesi, Tottenham can have all of it.

Moreover, we have seen how the Lilywhites have struggled to maintain focus to close out games, and this is where the 25-year-old’s experience from the current season at Inter could come into use.

A swap deal of their own?

In my opinion, Daniel Levy should be actively pushing to pursue Davide Frattesi’s signature and take advantage of this current lack of game time at Inter, given how he resolves multiple problems in the current midfield. Moreover, his tactical skill set fits what Ange needs at the moment.

Tottenham can also go on and offer Yves Bissouma in a possible deal with Inter, something that Bryan King had suggested in the past winter transfer window.
