Djed Spence has undoubtedly been Tottenham Hotspur’s best player over the past few months
Tottenham Hotspur have endured a difficult season, sitting as lowly as 13th in the Premier League table following Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Bournemouth at home.
The Lilywhites were also dumped out of the FA Cup in February, after being beaten 2-1 by Aston Villa just three days after their upsetting 4-0 defeat to Liverpool in the second leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final. Now, their season hinges on the Europa League where Ange Postecoglou’s side trail 1-0 against AZ Alkmaar from the first leg of the Europa League last-16 tie.
In a season marred by injury problems, however, it allowed Ange Postecoglou the chance to find some hidden gems in his squad who may otherwise not have had the chance to express themselves. Djed Spence is one of those players.
The English full-back has been one of the rare bright spots in an otherwise underwhelming campaign for Spurs, establishing himself as a mainstay in Ange Postecoglou’s XI with consistent performances over the last three months. His turnaround at N17 has been quite remarkable—going from being surplus to requirements for the Australian tactician to now becoming one of the first names on the teamsheet.
The emergence of Djed Spence has not gone unnoticed, with James Maddison dubbing him ‘phenomenal’ after breaking into the Tottenham side this season. The creative midfielder says he has loved watching the defender get so much game time, stating his rise as a real blessing from the club’s unprecedented injury situation this campaign.
James Maddison said in an exclusive interview with Sky Sports:
“The one blessing that it kind of created was the fact that we got exposure to the young lads and the lads who hadn’t played as much, so the likes of Djed (Spence) got his opportunity and he’s been phenomenal.”

Such has been Spence’s form that BBC presenter Gary Lineker has tipped him to make the England squad for the upcoming England squad for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Albania and Latvia. New England head coach Thomas Tuchel is set to name his England squad for the two games on Friday evening, and there is a great chance the Tottenham full-back makes the cut, especially after injuries to Lewis Hall and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Truly, had Spurs not witnessed an injury crisis this season, the fans would not have got the chance to see Spence play. He was left out of the squad in the opening months of the campaign, only for a glut of injuries in defence forced Big Ange to reintegrate him into the side. And the former England youth international has grabbed the opportunities with both hands, displaying his versatility, skill-set, competitive nature and energy.
The fans will want Spence to continue his rich vein of form and help Spurs beat AZ Alkmaar in the return leg of the Europa League last-16 tie on Thursday.
