Mathys Tel is yet to fully adapt to the demands of Premier League football following loan switch from Bayern Munich
Tottenham Hotspur sold Harry Kane in a huge deal to Bayern Munich in the summer of 2023. In January 2024, the Bundesliga giants snapped up Eric Dier from the Lilywhites.
Daniel Levy used the cordial relationship with Bayern Munich to secure a deal for Mathys Tel on the winter transfer window’s deadline day. The Frenchman joined on loan until the end of the season, and Spurs have an option to make that move permanent this summer.
Mathys Tel has not managed to hit the ground running at White Hart Lane, having struggled to adapt so far with the pace and physicality of the Premier League. That is perhaps to be expected of someone so young, still developing and inexperienced who has just moved to a new country midway through the campaign.

The teenager has had his fair share of highs and lows since joining Ange Postecoglou’s squad for a little over a month now. Tel scored a very good header against Aston Villa in the FA Cup in what was his only second game for Tottenham, although it turned out to be a mere consolation as his team exited the competition after being beaten 2-1 at Villa Park.
Since then, the French forward has not quite been able to make an impact as he would have liked. He was subbed off at half-time in the first leg of the Europa League last-16 tie against AZ Alkmaar last week and Ange Postecoglou opted not to bring him off the bench in the 2-2 Premier League draw with Bournemouth at home.
Tel has received some criticism of late, with some fans questioning whether Spurs should sign him permanently for big bucks in the summer. However, Tottenham coaches and members of the hierarchy think otherwise.

According to an exclusive report from GIVEMESPORT, Spurs want to sign Tel on a permanent deal from Bayern as ‘there is confidence behind the scenes that there is still bags of potential to unlock’ in Tel in the coming months and years. In addition, the coaching staff and the chiefs at the Hotspur Way view him as an ‘attractive option on the left flank at a time when there is growing uncertainty over Son Heung-min’s future’.
Tel is capable of playing across the front three, but Tottenham’s injury situation has led to Big Ange using him as a No.9. The Bayern loanee’s favoured position is off the left flank cutting in on his strong right foot, which is perhaps why he has not blossomed into the No.9 role in recent games.

It is pretty clear that Tottenham views Tel as a long-term option. Big Ange and his coaching staff are being patient with him, providing great support and time to adapt to the rigours of English football. They believe there is a massive talent in there, with the Australian tactician admitting last month of his wishes to sign the Sarcelles-born forward permanently.
