Tottenham Hotspur have gone 17 years without a major trophy to their name
Dimitar Berbatov was part of the last Tottenham Hotspur team that won a trophy. That was almost two decades ago, back in 2008 when the club beat Chelsea to lift the League Cup at Wembley Stadium. However, the club has been through a lot since then but the only thing that is not yet achieved is winning a major trophy again since then.
Spurs have come close to winning a major trophy a few times since then, namely the Champions League final in 2019, which the Lilywhites lost to Liverpool in a straightforward match. But, the North London club has reached a stage where they come close to winning something and then somehow find a way to bottle it.

Spurs have had one more disastrous campaign this season under manager Ange Postecoglou. The English club are sitting in 13th place in the Premier League, way behind where they intend to be and are already out of all domestic competitions.
Tottenham Chairman Daniel Levy has come under a lot of scrutiny for the club’s downfall. The Spurs fans have ran out of patience and regular protests are held to remind the Spurs Chairman that he is not fit for the job at hand.
Dimitar Berbatov speaks about lack of trophies
Dimitar Berbatov left Spurs for Manchester United in 2008 after winning the League Cup in 2008 for the Lilywhites. That trophy remains as the last trophy that the North London Club have won in the last two decades. Whereas, Berbatov has gone on to win the Premier League twice under Sir Alex Ferguson.
When asked about the lack of trophies at Spurs, Berbatov told Football.london,
“Some of the players are too long into the team now. When you spend too long into the team, you get comfortable, I mean, you didn’t win anything, this is going to be your mentality of not winning anything.”

The ex-Bulgaria international added,
“I think every team should be shuffle around every four years, especially if the team is not winning anything with the players that the team has. And then you try to get new players with which you can to try to win a trophy.”
Shuffling the whole squad is not feasible as it takes a long time for the club to buy or sell a player. However, what Berbatov is trying to say is that Spurs should take a ruthless approach with players and release players that have been underperforming constantly, instead of keeping them on long contracts.
It was said during the 2019 UEFA Champions League final that trophies are the equivalent of currency in football. Tottenham have failed to add to their bank balance in that regard in recent decades. Unless we make it a habit of securing silverware on a regular basis, any claim of being a top club will ring hollow.

Tottenham Hotspur still have a chance to save their season by trying to progress through to the next stage of the Europa League. However, Ange’s men will first have to overcome a 1-0 deficit against AZ Alkmaar at home if they want to have any chance of winning a rare silverware.
