“Big enough and ugly enough”- Tottenham star hits back at Manchester United legend over recent criticism

Date:

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder James Maddison has been under the spotlight this season

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder James Maddison is having a rollercoaster of a season. The 28-year-old has been in and out of Ange Postecoglou’s side and has also suffered numerous injuries this season. However, the England international has scored some crucial goals for Spurs whenever he has been called upon.

Maddison joined Tottenham in 2023 from Leicester City and was one of Ange Postecoglou’s key signings that summer. But the England international’s first season at the club was not a success. As per Sofascore, Maddison managed to score just four goals and provide nine assists in 30 games in all competitions.

Spurs fans were hoping the attacking midfielder would make an impact this season, and Maddison has done just that whenever he has been given a chance. According to Sofascore, the ex-Leicester City player has scored 10 goals and provided seven assists in 34 games this season and still has a number of games left before the season is over.

The Spurs No.10 has not enjoyed a run of consistent game time under Ange this season, with other midfielders performing more consistently and being available for the Australian manager.

Maddison responds to Roy Keane’s criticism

Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane had criticised James Maddison, accusing the midfielder of not showing up for his team when it mattered the most and not being a good example for the youngsters in the squad.

Ever since this statement was made by Keane, the Spurs midfielder has hit the ground running and has managed to score two goals and provide one assist in six games. The England international managed to score one of those goals against Keane’s beloved Manchester United and Maddison’s goal celebration in that game was a dig towards the ex-Ireland international.

When asked by Sky Sports in a recent interview about the incident with Roy Keane, the Spurs No.10 said,

“Yeah that’s okay, I’d rather that than them talk about Archie or Lucas. I don’t mind taking the heat a little bit. I’m big enough and ugly enough now to take the hits and take the criticism because I know what I’m capable of, I know what I can do.”

Maddison went on to add,

“I know my personal level and what people don’t see is what we do behind the scenes and how much we’re trying to improve and how much we work and it’s very cheap to go and sit and talk and criticise.”

James Maddison was not pleased with what Roy Keane said and the Spurs midfielder will be looking to respond to his doubters by hopefully putting a few more good performances and bring a silverware back to N17 at the end of the season.
