Djed Spence forgets at times how young Archie Gray is

Djed Spence has enjoyed his breakout season at Tottenham Hotspur. A tough campaign due to a glut of injuries and results led Ange Postecoglou to recall the full-back into his squad after being initially frozen out.

The 24-year-old has featured across the Spurs defence, impressing with his ability to contribute both defensively and going forward. Djed Spence has played alongside some of Europe’s highly-rated young talents at Tottenham and other clubs out on loan. And one of them is Archie Gray.

The North London club signed Archie Gray from Leeds United for £30million last summer. Due to a severe injury crisis in Ange Postecoglou’s second season in charge of the club, the teenager has been asked to play a lot of football out of position this season, most notably at centre-back. However, the England youth international has performed his duties without much fuss.

Gray has ended up playing a lot more than he would have expected to in his first season at the Premier League level, rising up to the challenge and impressing with his versatility. As a result, he was recently recognised at the London Football Awards. His Spurs teammate Kevin Danso has also backed him to make it big at the club.

Spence has now had his say on Gray. Having played in close proximity to the Durham-born talent this season, Spence has an idea of Gray’s game. Speaking on the Rio Ferdinand Presents Podcast, the 24-year-old was full of praise for the England Under-21 international, admitting that he often forgets how young his Tottenham teammate is.

“Sky’s the limit for him [Gray] to be honest. I forget he’s 18 [19 now] sometimes. Sometimes, I’ve to look at myself like, you know, he’s playing out of position, 18, you know. He’s a midfielder playing centre-back and he’s doing well as well,” Spence said on Rio Ferdinand Presents.

“He’s doing well, man, he’s a great talent and the sky’s the limit for him.”

It is clear that Tottenham have signed one of the hottest English prospects in the game last summer. Gray has surprised everyone with the ease at which he has operated in central defence during the injury absences of Cristian Romero, Micky Van de Ven and Ben Davies, emerging as a major silver lining to an underwhelming season at N17.

The likes of Gray and Spence have got much more minutes than they would otherwise have, and they have been exposed to some intense and high-pressure situations particularly in the Europa League.
