Real Betis internally sense that Tottenham will sign Johnny Cardoso during the summer transfer window
Tottenham Hotspur have had problems in every area of the pitch of the season. They managed to address the goalkeeping, defensive and offensive departments by signing Antonin Kinsky, Kevin Danso and Mathys Tel during the January transfer window.
When it comes to midfield, there exist problems for Ange Postecoglou’s side. Lucas Bergvall and Archie Gray—recruited from IF Djurgardens and Leeds United, respectively, last year- have been the only bright spots for Spurs this season. A lot more credit to Gray because he has barely played in his preferred midfield position, mainly operating across the backline to fill in for injured senior stars.
The Hotspur Way chiefs rate Gray and Bergvall extremely highly and view them as the future of the club’s midfield unit. To unlock the teenage duo’s true potential, they are reportedly inclined towards signing a specialist No.6 when the transfer window reopens in June.

Tottenham did smart work by agreeing on a clause with Real Betis for midfielder Johnny Cardoso when selling Giovani Lo Celso to the La Liga club last summer. This saw them acquire a £21m option to buy the defensive midfielder, which will become active this summer.
Johnny Cardoso enjoyed an impressive 2024/25 campaign with Real Betis, netting in the 2-1 win over rivals Sevilla last weekend. It was a crucial equaliser in the thrilling Sevilla derby, one that brought Manuel Pellegrini’s side back in the game before Cucho Hernandez scored the winner in the second half.
The USA international, since shaking off the injury woes that sidelined him in recent matches, has been in rollicking form, and his progress would certainly not have gone unnoticed at Tottenham. Now, according to a report from Spanish outlet AS, Real Betis think Spurs are going to activate Cardoso’s £21m buy option. The La Liga side are working under the impression that the 23-year-old will move to Spurs this summer, with Pellegrini’s side in desperate need of an injection of funds.

Having proven himself in La Liga after only arriving at Betis in January 2024, the Brazil-born American star is looking every bit like a player ready for the next step. At 23, Cardoso would be a fantastic addition to the Lilywhites’ squad, someone capable of solving our midfield conundrum.

With Yves Bissouma appearing to be heading to the exit door, the Denville-born talent would be an ideal option to replace him at the heart of Tottenham’s midfield and dictate play next season. If Cardoso, who recently admitted that he feels valued by Tottenham links, continues in this vein of form, Daniel Levy might have little choice but to trigger the buy clause before other clubs start circling.
