Tottenham star Cristian Romero discusses Atletico Madrid move with Diego Simeone
Tottenham Hotspur are bracing themselves for a crucial summer transfer window, particularly in the defensive department.
The long-term future of Cristian Romero appears to lie away from Spurs after recent transfer developments. The centre-back will have two years left on his contract at the end of the season.
Therefore, the Hotspur Way chiefs want the Argentine to commit his future to the club by signing an extension. However, if he fails to agree on fresh terms by the end of the season, the Lilywhites will reportedly cash him in this summer.

La Liga club Atletico Madrid have made Cristian Romero a defensive priority for the upcoming summer transfer window. And it looks like the 2022 World Cup winner is open to joining Los Rojiblancos.
Journalist Sacha Tavolieri has revealed in his column for Sky Sports Switzerland that Romero has recently spoken on the phone with Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone about a potential move to La Liga.
The Spurs star is believed to be ‘excited’ by the possibility of joining Atletico, with Simeone having made him a priority target. Initial discussions have already taken place between the South American’s representatives and the Spanish outfit over personal terms, which is not expected to be an issue.
Tavolieri adds that the main hindrance to this deal remains Spurs’ asking price. Daniel Levy deems Romero untransferable, however, he could still demand up to €80million to let his defensive ace leave this summer.

Earlier this week, reports emerged that the North Londoners could accept a £50m bid for the Argentina international. The 26-year-old was valued highly by the club in recent windows but his inconsistent form coupled with injury problems have seen them now ask a fee in the region of £50m.
Indeed, the Cordoba-born talent has endured an injury-ravaged season, restricting him to only 14 Premier League appearances. He has only returned recently after almost three months on the sidelines, featuring in the club’s last two Premier League games before representing Argentina during the March international break.

It appears Romero’s time at White Hart Lane is coming to an end. So, who could replace the World Cup winner in Ange Postecoglou’s roster next season? The club bosses have been targeting a move for Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite as a potential replacement for Romero, while Crystal Palace skipper Marc Guehi also remains on Tottenham’s radar.
