Tottenham and Manchester United go up against each other for Ligue 1 forward

Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United fight it out for Evann Guessand

Tottenham Hotspur’s forwards have largely failed to deliver this season. The Lilywhites have endured a poor run of form in recent weeks, and some would argue that the international break arrived at just the right time for Ange Postecoglou and his squad. In their last outing before the break, Spurs were unable to find the back of the net, suffering a disappointing 2-0 defeat to Fulham in the Premier League.

While Tottenham rank third in the league for total goals scored this season, the numbers don’t tell the full story. Postecoglou’s attack has often come up short in key moments, with several forwards underperforming when it matters most. Even last summer’s marquee signing, Dominic Solanke, has managed just 11 goals so far—far from the impact Spurs had hoped for when he arrived.

Tottenham’s forwards have struggled to perform consistently this season.

As the club heads into a decisive phase of the season, Ange Postecoglou will be hoping his forwards can finally find their rhythm and help Tottenham finish on a high. With the Europa League representing their last real shot at silverware and European qualification, Spurs fans will be eager to see the attacking unit fully fit and firing ahead of the crucial quarter-final clash against Eintracht Frankfurt later this month.

Tottenham eyeing OGC Nice forward Evann Guessand

Tottenham have lacked a reliable striker to compete with Dominic Solanke for the starting role. While the Spurs No.19 has shown flashes of his potential this season, Ange Postecoglou hasn’t had the opportunity to fully develop him due to the injuries that have hampered Solanke throughout the campaign.

In January, Spurs were actively searching for reinforcements up front and set their sights on Nice forward Evann Guessand. However, the 23-year-old opted to remain in France after the two clubs failed to reach an agreement. As a result, Tottenham turned to Bayern Munich’s Mathys Tel, securing the young striker on an initial loan deal with an obligation to buy in the summer.

Now, the Lilywhites are reportedly (h/t M Sports) back in the race for Evann Guessand after closely monitoring his performances throughout the season. Tottenham remain keen on the Ivorian forward as they look to bolster their attacking options ahead of the next campaign. However, they are not alone in the pursuit, Manchester United are also said to be interested in signing the prolific striker, setting up a potential transfer battle between the two Premier League giants.

A good move by Tottenham?

Guessand is enjoying a standout campaign with Nice this season. The 23-year-old has been in excellent form, registering 12 goals and eight assists in just 36 appearances across all competitions. His impressive run continued on the international stage as well, where he found the net for Ivory Coast during the World Cup qualifiers, further underlining his growing reputation as a rising forward to watch.

In addition to playing as a striker, Guessand offers valuable versatility, with the ability to operate as a right-winger when required. His standout attributes include excellent ball recovery and a strong ability to carry the ball into the final third, qualities that make him a threat in transition. Guessand consistently looks to play progressive passes and is clinical when presented with chances in front of goal. The 23-year-old thrives in high-tempo systems, and his relentless work rate makes him a perfect fit for teams that press aggressively and play with intensity.

Guessand could prove to be a perfect fit for Tottenham Hotspur. While some fans may be sceptical due to his lack of big-name status, the Ivorian forward possesses the qualities to complement Dominic Solanke and offer Ange Postecoglou a different attacking dynamic. His versatility, work rate, and ability to impact games in multiple ways could bring a fresh edge to Spurs’ frontline. Signing Guessand might not make headlines, but it could quietly mark the beginning of a new and more balanced era under Postecoglou.
