Tottenham are interested in signing Lyon’s highly-rated playmaker Rayan Cherki but there is a catch
It has been far from a memorable campaign for Ange Postecoglou and Tottenham Hotspur. An injury crisis have disrupted the rhythm and consistency of the team, leaving the boss with a wafer-thin squad at times to compete with.
To avoid another chaotic campaign, the Hotspur Way chiefs have started mapping out potential targets. A creative midfielder could do well for Spurs, given James Maddison’s lack of consistency. Perhaps that is why the Lilywhites are reportedly keeping close tabs on Lyon midfielder Rayan Cherki.
Rayan Cherki, who has long been rated as one of the brightest prospects in European football, has not yet managed to live up to his high potential at Lyon. This season, though, there has been a change for good with the youngster finally starting to deliver consistent performances and becoming one of the leaders of Lyon’s attack.

Following eight goals and 18 assists in 35 appearances across all competitions, the France youth international has underlined why is he is rated some highly across the continent. As Cherki will enter the final 12 months of his contract at the end of June and has an agreement with Lyon that will allow him to depart for less than £25m this summer, several European clubs have been put on red alert.
Now, reputable Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano has shared an interesting update on the Lyon star. He revealed details about Cherki’s supposed release clause in his contract, but a deal won’t be easy to do.
“Yes, but it’s not an ‘easy’ clause. Lyon insist there are certain conditions to be met, so it’s not that simple. In any case, for me, it’s a potential bargain as he is an excellent talent,” Romano wrote in his latest GIVEMESPORT newsletter.

Lyon are in financial trouble and have been handed a provisional relegation to Ligue 2 as a result, which could force them to make some high-profile sales at the end of the season. Cherki is among those players, and Tottenham must take advantage of the French club’s financial instability and try to sign him.

In Cherki, the Lilywhites would get a versatile midfielder who is comfortable playing on the right flank and through the middle as a No.10. This should not only make the French-born Algerian a good option to improve the productivity but also to compete with Brennan Johnson on the right wing. Also, he fits the North Londoners’ transfer strategy of finding young talents with high potential.
