However, Sheringham also issued a word of caution, highlighting that while Gray’s versatility is undoubtedly an asset, it could also become a stumbling block. He warned that constantly being shifted around the pitch might hinder the former Leeds man from truly mastering a specific role, potentially limiting his ability to reach his full potential in one defined position.
In an interview with WDW Bingo, as reported by SpursWeb, Sheringham described Archie Gray as a great signing, and one of Tottenham’s best-performing players of the season. He mentioned Gray has always been willing to step onto the pitch, showing composure and maturity beyond his years, and is “nowhere near his peak” despite being placed in difficult positions.
Sheringham added that the 19-year-old has already featured in numerous roles—central midfield, out wide, full-back, even centre-back—and has delivered top performances wherever he’s been asked to play. While praising Gray’s adaptability as a major asset for the team, Sheringham also pointed out a potential concern. He explained that as a young footballer with ambition, Gray won’t want to be labelled simply as a utility player. Instead, he’ll be eager to establish himself in a defined role and prove he belongs in the starting XI week in, week out next season.
