Tottenham ace set to be dropped for Southampton clash; Surprise replacement emerges

Tottenham are expected to drop skipper Son Heung-min vs Southampton
Tottenham Hotspur appear to be a shadow of their former selves as they languish in 16th place, enduring their worst season in nearly three decades. With Ange Postecoglou under mounting pressure and fighting to save his job, the focus has shifted to salvaging what little remains of this campaign. Reports now suggest that the Spurs boss is expected to bench club captain Son Heung-min for their upcoming clash against Southampton on Sunday.
There were murmurs that Son would be dropped against Chelsea, but he did start at Stamford Bridge. However, following yet another lacklustre result, it seems that decision might finally materialise.

Tottenham’s clash with Chelsea marked a crucial return to action following the international break, but it turned out to be anything but a morale booster. The limp performance did little to lift the spirits of the Spurs faithful, especially with a massive UEFA Europa League quarter-final tie against Eintracht Frankfurt looming.
However, the North London side now have a chance to reset and gather momentum as they prepare to host Southampton at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday. Ange Postecoglou is expected to ring the changes for what is shaping up to be a must-win fixture in their fading domestic campaign.
Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham, in an exclusive with Tottenham News, has weighed in on Ange Postecoglou’s possible line-up tweaks for the upcoming clash against Southampton. Wenham believes club captain Son Heung-min could be dropped to the bench, making way for 16-year-old Mikey Moore in the starting XI.
The Spurs pundit also backed a dynamic front three of Moore, Dominic Solanke, and Wilson Odobert, offering a youthful and energetic alternative to recent underwhelming displays. He further suggested benching Destiny Udogie for Pedro Porro at full-back, while advocating for continuity in midfield. As for the result? Wenham admitted anything is possible—from a dominant 5-0 win to a flat 2-0 defeat.
“Nobody knows what is going to happen in this game,”
“It could be anything from a 5-0 Tottenham win to a 2-0 defeat. However, I think Son will drop to the bench, and Moore could come in to replace him.”
“I’d like to see Moore start alongside Dominic Solanke and Wilson Odobert. Meanwhile, I’d start with the same midfield and drop Destiny Udogie to the bench for Pedro Porro.”

Given all of Tottenham’s issues this season, one thing remains clear: they simply have to beat Southampton. The Saints have been statistically one of the weakest sides in Premier League history, and Spurs hammered them 5-0 at St Mary’s earlier in December. With the club spiraling and confidence at a low, anything less than three points would be inexcusable. If Ange Postecoglou cannot inspire a win on Sunday, there will be little left to justify keeping him in the job. This is a must-win, not just for the table but for the manager’s future.
