Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy backed to sell Cristian Romero to Atletico Madrid this summer
It looks like Cristian Romero is heading for the exit door from Tottenham Hotspur.
The Argentine defender has spent the majority of the campaign on the sidelines following a combination of hamstring and quad injuries, as Ange Postecoglou‘s side have struggled in the Premier League. When fit, he has barely made an impact for Spurs, who find themselves languishing in the bottom half of the Premier League table.
As a result, questions over his long-term reliability have begun to surface. Adding to the uncertainty, Spanish side Atletico Madrid have reportedly expressed an interest in signing Cristian Romero. They have made the Tottenham star their summer’s defensive priority, with boss Diego Simeone understood to have held talks with the 26-year-old over a potential move.
With interest mounting and the player’s future up in the air, it’s looking increasingly likely that the South American could be on his way out of White Hart Lane at the end of the season.

With two years left on his contract at N17, reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham thinks a move to Atletico would be perfect for Romero, and there couldn’t be a better time for Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy to sanction his sale.
“I couldn’t think of a club that Romero would be better suited to,” John Wenham exclusively told Tottenham News.
“From Spurs’ point of view, I think it is time for a clean break. For whatever reason, Romero’s time at Tottenham hasn’t quite worked out as people would have wanted it to, for multiple reasons.
“Although he is one of our few world-class players, I think this summer is the right time to move on from him. However, the issue is always going to be that Tottenham paid £40million for Romero. Saying that, Atletico Madrid do have the money, as we saw when they signed Julián Alvarez.
“This will need to be a decent deal for Tottenham. However, I do expect Romero to leave permanently.”

Tottenham splashed £40million to secure Romero’s signing from Atalanta in 2022, but with him on course to enter the last two years of his deal, it will be interesting to see Tottenham’s asking price for the central defender. Recent reports suggest that the club bosses are ready to sell the Argentina international for £50m this summer.
Being one of the few world-class players at the club, £50m for Romero would be an absolute bargain for Atletico. At 26, the former Atalanta man is entering the peak of his powers and wants to play regularly in the Champions League, and Atletico should be able to offer that—almost certainly next season, at least.

Thus, if the La Liga club tables a bid that meets our demands, Levy should sell Romero and reinvest the funds in reported target Jarrad Branthwaite of Everton.
