Tottenham have been handed a boost in their hopes to land highly coveted Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap
Tottenham Hotspur’s immediate focus is on the Europa League, where they will cross swords with Eintracht Frankfurt in the quarter-final. The players are hungry for European success, though attention will swiftly turn to the summer once their fate is decided.
Several players have already been linked with a move to White Hart Lane. One of them is Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap.
Liam Delap swapped Manchester City for Ipswich Town last summer after failing to break into Pep Guardiola’s side. The English centre-forward has enjoyed a breakout campaign in the Premier League, netting 12 goals in 30 appearances. He is attracting interest from some of the top sides in England, following an excellent season under the guidance of Kieran McKenna.
However, with the summer transfer set to open in June, Delap could be on the move again with Tottenham among several Premier League clubs vying for his signature. Now, Spurs and the rest of his suitors have been handed a big boost.
According to a report from The Guardian, Delap’s release clause will fall to £30m in the event of Ipswich being relegated from the Premier League. Man City have a 20% sell-on clause and a buy-back option, but they are unlikely to trigger the latter.
The 22-year-old has played a prominent role in the Tractor Boys’ attempt to retain their top-flight status. But McKenna’s side are 12 points behind 17th-placed Wolverhampton Wanderers with seven fixtures left, and their hopes of getting a bigger fee for the young striker will be damaged if they go back to the Championship.
This update of Delap’s release clause dropping down in the event of Ipswich getting relegated should cause a stir at Tottenham, who are eyeing attacking reinforcements. The club bosses want to offload Richarlison in the summer, while Son Heung-min’s future remains up in the air. Despite Spurs leaning towards signing Mathys Tel permanently from Bayern Munich, a striker to cover and compete with Dominic Solanke next season would be an absolute must.
Delap, in that regard, would be a fantastic option for Tottenham to consider. At 22, he fits the criteria of signings Daniel Levy has made in recent years—young, dynamic and high-potential players. The England under-21 international now has a year of top-flight experience as well, showing his quality by leading the attack for a relegation-threatened side.
