Tottenham face fresh stumbling block in the pursuit of highly-rated Crystal Palace talent Adam Wharton

Tottenham have been dealt a blow in their pursuit of Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton

Tottenham Hotspur are planning to bring in more promising young talents into the squad in the summer to perform a lot better next season than this current one. It would not be surprising if the club decides to make wholesale changes to the squad, considering the injury problems and highly inconsistent displays.

The Spurs officials are expected to stick to their transfer strategy of signing young, prodigious talents who can develop into future superstars. One of the names who they have been reportedly interested is Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton.

Adam Wharton is rated as one of the hottest young talents in English football. He has grown leaps and bounds since joining Crystal Palace from the Championship side Blackburn Rovers in February 2024. The 21-year-old, whose stock has risen significantly over the last 12 months, has already earned an England cap, which demonstrates his vast potential. He was also included in England’s Euro 2024 squad, although he failed to play a single minute in Germany.

The youngster has had a tough season with the Eagles, spending more than two months on the sidelines following a groin surgery. But since returning from injury, Wharton has become a regular starter for Oliver Glasner’s side. He has made 20 appearances across all competitions this season to date.

This has led to interest from several top clubs, including Tottenham, but a new reveal may put the potential of any deal in jeopardy.

According to an exclusive report from GIVEMESPORT, Crystal Palace are planning to increase their demands to in the region of £100million due to Wharton gaining widespread interest from Premier League rivals and clubs from abroad. They are under no pressure to sell, with the English starlet having four years left on his Selhurst Park contract (Transfermarkt).

Wharton is a press-resistant distributor with good technique and vision, and given that he is only 21, he can fit in the young roster at White Hart Lane and grow alongside other starlets in Lucas Bergvall and Archie Gray. There is no doubt that the ex-Blackburn Rovers man would be a sensational addition to Big Ange’s Spurs side, enhancing the club’s pool of young talents. He has shown glimpses of his talent in the Premier League, which makes him such a highly coveted commodity heading into the summer transfer window.

However, the Lilywhites are facing a fresh stumbling block due to the Eagles’ rising valuation of their midfielder. Palace appear likely to finish in mid-table this season, so them asking a fee around £100 million is a tactic to scare away his potential suitors. Palace wants to hold their ground in front of their Premier League and try to get as much money as possible by initiating a bidding war, having already known by now that they cannot keep hold of Wharton for a long time.

For now, though, it is a setback in Tottenham’s pursuit of the 21-year-old. They are better off spreading their money across a few acquisitions rather than breaking the bank for Wharton to solidify their midfield unit and leaving themselves short in defence and attack. Described as a top-level player, Wharton certainly has the minerals to go all the way.
