Barcelona have held talks with Tottenham star Rodrigo Bentancur’s agents ahead of a possible summer move

Tottenham Hotspur have a lot of big decisions to make during the off season, and chief among those will be addressing the contractual situation of certain players.

There are a few Spurs stars whose contracts expire at the end of the season. And some are also entering the final year of their contracts, which Daniel Levy and his team must sort it out.

Rodrigo Bentancur remains under contract at White Hart Lane until the summer of 2026, but the club do not want to let him cash him in this summer or allow him to potentially depart on a free transfer next year. This is because the Lilywhites view the midfielder as central to their plans moving forward and have reportedly opened talks over a new contract.

Tottenham want to extend Rodrigo Bentancur’s contract

It has not always been plain sailing for Rodrigo Bentancur at N17 since arriving from Juventus in January 2022, with the Uruguayan experiencing constant injury problems that have not allowed him to reach his potential thus far. Off-field issues have also kept him in the headlines. However, the 27-year-old has been a mainstay under Ange Postecoglou and has become a senior figure in the dressing room for Tottenham.

Amid ongoing talks over a new contract, there has been growing interest in Bentancur. Atletico Madrid have been the subject of aggressive links with the central midfielder in recent weeks. Now, there is an entry of a European giant.

According to an exclusive report from The Boy Hotspur, Barcelona have expressed an interest in signing the Tottenham star. Along with Atletico Madrid, the Blaugrana have contacted Bentancur’s representatives about a possible transfer.

With more than 100 appearances for the club, the Uruguayan international is one of Tottenham’s more seasoned campaigners. He brings a sense of calmness, maturity and leadership to the squad, and while his numbers for a central midfielder might not be alluring, Bentancur’s impact in Ange’s Spurs side cannot be undermined.

The aforementioned report adds that both Barcelona and Atletico Madrid are keen to sign the South American enforcer at a reasonable price, although talks with the player’s agents are at an early stage.

With interest from the La Liga giants, the South American and his agents are likely to use it as leverage in his contract talks, aiming to secure improved terms as negotiations with the club progress.

Tottenham do not expect Bentancur to push for an exit, though both Barcelona and Atletico are closely monitoring his situation at White Hart Lane. That said, should a contract extension fail to come into fruition, Spurs must prefer to cash Bentancur in this summer rather than risk losing him for free in 2026.
