Tottenham eyeing move for Bournemouth defender Dean Huijsen as potential replacement for Cristian Romero

Tottenham Hotspur’s main focus for now will be on the Europa League after their 1-1 draw with Eintracht Frankfurt in the first leg of the quarter-finals, though attention will swiftly turn to the summer transfer window immediately after.

The Spurs bosses have to resolve the uncertain futures of certain stars, and Cristian Romero is one of those. The Argentine has been far from his best this season, with a combination of hamstring and quad injuries limiting him to minimal impact on Ange Postecoglou’s side. Being the team’s defensive lynchpin, his absence for major chunks of the campaign have hurt the Lilywhites immensely.

Nonetheless, that hasn’t stopped Cristian Romero from being linked with a move away from Tottenham. The 26-year-old is reportedly wanted by Atletico Madrid to bolster their defence ahead of the new season. Their boss, Diego Simeone, has held private talks with the defender in a bid to lure him away from N17 to the Wanda Metropolitano. And the centre-back remains excited to join Atletico Madrid as the next adventure in his career.

With two years left on his contract, it now seems the ideal time for the 2022 World Cup winner and Spurs to part ways, and that is exactly what is expected to happen. A recent update from the reliable The Athletic journalist David Ornstein seems to suggest that Daniel Levy is already planning for Romero’s exit. He claims that Spurs are among several clubs to have held talks with the representatives of Bournemouth defender Dean Huijsen.

And reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham feels the North Londoners’ interest in Dean Huijsen suggests that Romero is gone at the end of the season.

“It confirms that Romero is probably off this summer,” John Wenham exclusively told Tottenham News.

“The fact that Tottenham are lining up another top-level centre-back suggests that they are preparing for Romero to leave the club.

“However, whether we would be able to sign Huijsen is another story. We would probably be his 10th or 11th choice, way down the pecking order.”

Bournemouth and Huijsen want to resolve his future as soon as possible, with his £50million release clause destined to be triggered soon. The Spanish international has been a revelation in the Premier League since joining from Juventus last summer, quickly becoming a key cog in the Cherries’ defence. He has been a consistent performer for Andoni Iraola’s side, thereby catching the eye of several clubs across Europe.

Huijsen would be a terrific addition to the Tottenham backline, capable of replacing Romero. The Amsterdam-born talent has displayed huge potential in his debut Premier League season at the Vitality Stadium, and he certainly fits the billing perfectly at White Hart Lane.

However, Tottenham face an uphill task to convince the 19-year-old to join them, as he is also wanted by several European bigwigs, along with our Premier League rivals Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Newcastle. So, whether Huijsen would pick us over other European giants would be intriguing to see.
