Ange Postecoglou backs Guglielmo Vicario to come good after a horror show against Wolverhampton Wanderers
It was the same old script for Tottenham Hotspur at Molineux on Sunday as defensive lapses once again proved to be their downfall in the 4-2 defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Ange Postecoglou criticised the team for conceding poor goals against Wolves. The Australian tactician revealed that he saw something at Molineux he hadn’t seen before from his side, a worrying admission that hints at a broken mentality or loss of confidence within the squad.
The role of Guglielmo Vicario was questionable for two of the four goals Spurs conceded, with the goalkeeper once again showing his weaknesses dealing with balls and crosses in the box.
For the first goal, the Italian parried the ball straight into the crowd, only for Wolves wing-back Rayan Ait-Nouri to score with a first-time volley. The Tottenham No.1 was quick to appeal, insisting he had been impeded by Marshall Munetsi in the box, but VAR check showed minimal contact that led to them sticking with the on-field referee’s decision.

The Premier League, in an official statement, also revealed the VAR’s decision to allow Wolves’ opener to stand was the correct one. For Wolves’ third, Guglielmo Vicario dived sideways to punch out a weak effort, only to push it against Djed Spence and the ball bounced off the full-back and into the back of the net.
When asked if he has 100 per cent faith in Vicario ahead of the crucial tie against Eintracht Frankfurt, Postecoglou told Football London:
“Yeah, 100 per cent confidence. Obviously, we made some individual errors today which was a bit unusual for us, fair to say. They all happened in one game and unfortunately we got punished from it.”

Sunday’s game in the West Midlands was a miserable one for Tottenham. The manner in which they conceded the goals was simply shambolic. A series of individual errors culminated in what could only be described as a comedy of defensive lapses.
Vicario arguably had his worst game in a Spurs shirt, looking indecisive and shaky throughout the afternoon. The Italy international once again showed how poor he is when dealing with crosses in the box—either from open play or set-pieces. He is the team’s No.1 and has to improve a lot to keep his place in Ange’s XI.

Ange resisted the temptation to play the blame game after the defeat to Wolves. Instead, he took a holistic stance, refusing to single out any individual for the dismal loss. And honestly, the Lilywhites were not just let down by Vicario but also another senior star in Cristian Romero, who had an afternoon to forget at Molineux.
