Tottenham send scouts to watch Angers goalkeeper Yahia Fofana in action vs Montpellier in Ligue 1

Tottenham Hotspur were beaten comfortably by Wolverhampton Wanderers 4-2 at Molineux on Sunday. It was their embarrassing 17th defeat of the Premier League season, piling more misery and pressure on head coach Ange Postecoglou.

Goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario attracted a lot of criticism for his performance in the defeat to Wolves. He dropped two clangers in a forgettable sunny afternoon in the Black County.

Despite his strong appeal for an interference, the Italian gifted Wolves the lead within 90 seconds after punching his effort into the path of Rayan Ait-Nouri, who volleyed home with ease. The 28-year-old has looked rather shaky since returning from a long injury layoff, and he was also partly at fault for the home side’s second as his punch to clear a cross in the box rebounded in off Djed Spence.

While Guglielmo Vicario is anticipated to keep his place in between the sticks for the upcoming second leg of the Europa League quarter-finals at Eintracht Frankfurt on Thursday evening, there remains considerable uncertainty regarding his long-term role at the club.

According to an exclusive report from TBR Football, Tottenham were among a few clubs to have scouted Angers goalkeeper Yahia Fofana during the impressive 2-0 weekend win over Montpellier in Ligue 1. Manchester City and Manchester United scouts were also in attendance, while the likes of Brentford, Nottingham Forest, Newcastle United and Wolves have watched the goalkeeper in recent weeks.

Yahia Fofana joined Angers on a free transfer from Le Havre in 2022. He has been a consistent performer in goal for Angers, making 73 appearances to date. The Paris-born glovesman has made 29 Ligue 1 appearances this season, conceding 46 goals and keeping six clean sheets in the process.

The 24-year-old’s performances have caught the attention of Spurs, who could dip in the goalkeeper market again after investing in Antonin Kinsky during the January transfer window. Kinsky deputised for the injured Vicario, but after a promising debut against Liverpool in the Carabao Cup, the Czech Republic custodian started making errors. He is 22 and will improve with time, experience and maturity.

Spurs, however, need a reliable pair of hands in goal, which Vicario hasn’t been since arriving from Empoli in the summer of 2023. Fofana, in that regard, fits the bill perfectly. At 24, the Ivory Coast international is at the right age to make the step up in his career, and he will certainly be tempted to join a prestigious club like Tottenham. Also, with him on course to enter the final year of his contract at Angers, the Lilywhites could try luring him away from Ligue 1 on a bargain fee this summer.

Considering Vicario’s persistent shaky, error-prone displays, and Kinsky still raw, Daniel Levy would do a smart job by signing Fofana ahead of Tottenham’s Premier League rivals.
