Burnley signing Marcus Edwards permanently from Sporting CP would help Tottenham Hotspur financially
Tottenham Hotspur have made smart investments over the years, bringing in highly-rated young talents to the club. The acquisition of players such as Lucas Bergvall, Archie Gray and Wilson Odobert and many more clearly shows Daniel Levy’s long-term vision and planning at White Hart Lane.
Apart from making some quality signings, the Hotspur Way chiefs must be lauded for selling well. When they have sensed certain players are not good enough to make the grade at the club immediately, the club have sold them by attaching certain clauses. And one of the talents the Lilywhites decided to move on from their books was Marcus Edwards.
A product of the famed Tottenham academy, Marcus Edwards failed to break into the senior side and left the club on a free transfer as a rather unknown commodity for Portuguese side Vitoria in 2019. He was snapped up by Sporting CP in January 2022.

The 26-year-old built his career at Sporting CP, establishing himself as one of the exciting attackers in the Portuguese top flight. He has supplied 24 goals and 26 assists in 120 appearances for Sporting, but with his contract expiring at the end of June 2026 (Transfermarkt) and Edwards ousted from Rui Borges’ squad due to disciplinary issue, the Portuguese champions decided to loan him out to Championship side Burnley during the January transfer window.
Since joining Burnley, Edwards has locked down a spot on the right flank, starting nine of 11 league appearances thus far. The fleet-footed winger has scored a goal and registered an assist, playing a key role in the Scott Parker-managed club’s rise to second in the Championship table. The Clarets are aiming for top-flight promotion, and if that happens, Tottenham will benefit financially.
Now, according to a report from Portuguese outlet Record, Burnley have an obligation to make Edwards’ stay permanent for €10m plus €1m bonuses if they were to secure Premier League promotion. Should Parker’s side go up, Sporting will get 65% of the fee and Tottenham will be collecting €3.5m—thanks to a 35-percent sell-on clause in his contract.

Despite managing just one senior appearance for Tottenham, the Portuguese could help his former employers get some cash. The sell-on clause inserted back in 2022 has turned out to be a smart call from Levy and his team.

Given the form Burnley has been in of late, one would be a brave heart to bet against them clinching promotion. And Parker’s side playing Premier League football next season will see Edwards’ loan deal become an obligation. This, in turn, would help Spurs receive a significant windfall from the Portuguese’s sale from Sporting, which we can use to reinvest in acquiring our targets this summer.
