Tottenham stalwart set to sign a contract extension at the club

Ben Davies set to extend stay at Tottenham for one more season
Tottenham Hotspur defender Ben Davies has been at the club through thick and thin. The Wales international is the longest-serving player in the squad and has managed to outlive several managers and players during his time at N17. With the Lilywhites enduring a tough Premier League campaign, it is certain that the squad needs a major overhaul in the summer.
Spurs have faced the heat for quite some time now due to the mediocrity on show at N17. The fans and the media have scrutinised every small decision made at the club, and that has certainly not helped the decision-makers in any way. Although the Lilywhites are on their way to finishing in the bottom half of the Premier League, it is fair to say that they have enjoyed a rather successful time in rebuilding the squad and signing young talents.

The North London club have a few potentially world-class players in their ranks and the recruitment has been spot on. However, the club has always found it tough to sell underperforming players and get their salaries off the books. Spurs have also been supporting mediocrity, both on and off the pitch, for far too long under Levy.
Ben Davies set to sign a one-year extension at Tottenham
It has now been 17 years since Tottenham last won a major trophy. The Lilywhites have a chance to end that drought this season, as Ange Postecoglou’s side have managed to reach the Europa League semi-finals. But the European competition run has come at a cost. Spurs are staring down the barrel in the Premier League and are on course to finish the season in the bottom half of the league table.
Amidst all the chaos and drama at the club, it has also come to light that defender Ben Davies is set to sign a one-year contract extension at the club. The centre-back has struggled to find a place in the starting eleven under the last four managers and still Daniel Levy has decided to reward the 31-year-old with an extension.

The Welshman has always been a backup defender at N17 and has never managed to make the centre-back spot his own at the club. With Tottenham having an injury crisis this season at the back, the fans can join the dots as to why the Lilywhites do not want to let go of an experienced player in the summer.
A good decision by Tottenham?
The decision to extend Ben Davies’ contract is certainly questionable. The 31-year-old has managed to start just ten Premier League games this season. That certainly indicates that Ange Postecoglou does not rely on him to start regularly for the club. Also, the ten starts that came this season were only due to the injury crisis at the club.
On one hand, the club is looking to build a team for the future and sign young talents every summer. But on the other hand, Daniel Levy is also rewarding underwhelming players contract extensions and supporting mediocrity. This just puts the fans in a mix as to where the club is heading under ENIC and Levy.

Ben Davies also takes up a place in the squad and Tottenham would do better if they sold the 31-year-old instead and signed a much younger player in his place. This just shows that the Lilywhites have not learnt from their past mistakes, and are willing to paper over the cracks by making panic decisions.
