Tottenham Hotspur to lose Romero or Van de Ven this summer

Tottenham centre-backs Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven have been linked with exits this summer

Tottenham Hotspur’s squad looks set for a significant revamp in the transfer market after a disastrous domestic campaign. That overhaul could also be headed by a new boss if Ange Postecoglou is relieved of his duties at the end of the 2024/25 season.

Everyone knows Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven are Spurs’ first-choice centre-back pairing. The duo have formed an impressive partnership in defence since the start of the 2023/24 season under Ange Postecoglou, but their persistent fitness issues have been frustrating to watch.

Both Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven have missed significant chunks of the campaign owing to injury problems. Despite their lack of game time, they have been linked with exits from White Hart Lane.

Atletico Madrid have their eyes on Romero, with their boss Diego Simeone holding private talks with him over a possible move. The 2022 World Cup winner is eyeing a summer exit from Tottenham at the end of the season. He has been a key player for the North London outfit over the years, and the South American’s loss will undoubtedly be a big blow for them.

Meanwhile, Liverpool are ‘very keen’ on signing Van de Ven this summer. They want another centre-back after Virgil van Dijk committed his future at the club by signing an extension, and the Tottenham star has emerged as a target for the Reds.

Now, according to an exclusive report from Football Insider, Romero and Van de Ven could both be bound for departure from Tottenham this summer. However, the Spurs chiefs may have to accept Romero’s exit if they receive a ‘big enough offer’.

Van de Ven has a contract until 2029 at N17, which puts the club in a better position to keep him. It is understood that the club wants to build their defence around the Netherlands international.

The Lilywhites appear willing to accept offers for Romero, a big change from their no-sale attitude just 12 months ago. With two years left on his contract at N17, a move to Atletico Madrid would be perfect for the Argentine star, and there couldn’t be a better time for Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy to sanction his sale.

Spurs splashed £40million to sign Romero from Atalanta in 2022, but with him on course to enter the last two years of his deal, it will be interesting to see Levy’s asking price for the defender. If they do lose the 26-year-old, Levy will need to dig deep into his pockets and sign a quality replacement.

Bayer Leverkusen’s Jonathan Tah would be a good potential option to replace Romero, even if he is three years older than the South American. It is a huge summer window, and Tottenham would be looking to sign some experienced campaigners, and Tah certainly looks to be one of them.
