Tottenham Hotspur are among several European clubs keen to sign Lazio defender Mario Gila
Tottenham Hotspur faced their 18th Premier League defeat of the season on Monday night against Nottingham Forest. With the club sitting 16th in the Premier League table, there is a strong possibility that the North Londoners will finish the campaign just a place above the relegation zone.
One of the main issues for this Spurs side is their brittle defence. None of their defenders have got going this season, along with No.1 Guglielmo Vicario. We have seen the defenders lack discipline, organisational skills, make schoolboy errors and bad decisions on and off the ball. This has led to the Lilywhites conceding goals at an alarming rate this season.
Nottingham Forest further exposed Tottenham’s defensive flaws and poor setup, something which would need addressing during the summer transfer window if the team are to improve substantially next term. Also, the club bosses must address the futures of certain players, including Cristian Romero.
Romero has been heavily linked with a move to Atletico Madrid since the last month. When fit, the Argentine is among the best central defenders in the Premier League. He is among the first names on Ange’s teamsheet, so losing him in the summer would be a blow. Tottenham must now start planning for Romero’s future, with the central defender clearly hinting towards a summer exit on Monday.
Now, according to an exclusive report from CaughtOffside, Tottenham are among some European clubs interested in signing Lazio defender Mario Gila. They are set to face competition from Manchester City, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain, while Real Madrid are looking to re-sign the 24-year-old this summer.
Mario Gila left Real Madrid in 2022 to join Lazio, and he has since performed consistently in Serie A. He has made 37 appearances across all competitions so far this season, scoring two goals. The Spaniard’s performances in Lazio colours have put piqued the interest of several clubs ahead of the summer transfer window.
The aforementioned report adds that the Biancocelesti are prepared to let Gila leave for a fee of around €40-45 million. The defender’s former club, Real Madrid, retain a 50% resale right that was included in the deal during his move to Lazio almost three years ago.

At the age of 24, Gila is at the right age to test himself in the hustle and bustle of Premier League football. He is still some light years away from hitting his prime, and that would bode well for Tottenham in their hunt for Romero’s potential replacement. The Spanish defender is an uncompromising, aggressive centre-half with strong technical ball-playing skills, making him a perfect fit in Ange’s system at Tottenham.
Owing to the presence of some of Europe’s top clubs, signing Gila from Lazio would be extremely difficult for Tottenham. If he is viewed as a potential Romero replacement, one thing Spurs could guarantee him is regular game time and the ability to develop further.
