TTLB Opinion: Should Levy appoint Scott Parker as Tottenham’s head coach?

Is Scott Parker the man to take Tottenham Hotspur to the promised land

Ange Postecoglou has had a difficult time in charge at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, given how the Lilywhites have endured a difficult domestic campaign, which has left the North Londoners supporters frustrated, with quite a section of them calling for his head, and the chiefs at Hotspur Way are reacting likewise, given how the Premier League heavyweights have been linked with a move for multiple head coaches. However, a surprise name has emerged in recent reports, with Scott Parker being linked with a move to N17.

Now, many would already know Scott Parker; he has managed in the English top tier before and is being celebrated for wanting to play in a way where his side boasts controlled possession in a structured shape. He has a clear tactical identity that favours stability and methodical attacking sequences.

Although that being said, bringing in Parker at Tottenham would be a massive gamble by Daniel Levy, given how his experience being in charge of elite sides is quite limited, and there have been many questions around his adaptability against stronger opponents. And the,n coming to the final straw, his development record with young players is quite touch-and-go.

Let’s make first things clear before we get into Parker and his profile; at Tottenham, there are ambitions to qualify for the Champions League and contend for trophies every year, and develop players.

So, where does Scott Parker lie with his tactics?

Parker has emerged as a candidate for the Tottenham job

I will start with what I described above; he has a philosophy that is structured around controlled possession and structured build-up complemented by a certain discipline on the ball. So there is not a lot of tactical flexibility that comes with it. And then he has absolutely no European experience, a place where the club wants to dominate.

However, every player that has worked with him speaks extremely highly of Parker. He is a really good communicator with his players. Moreover, he promotes a clear defensive structure and emphasis on near short passing and patient possession, where he avoids chaos.

That being said, his teams often struggle in breaking down compact possessions (something that has been a thing of criticism under Ange Postecoglou as well). And his sides lack those bold tactical switches when chasing games, owing to the lack of tactical flexibility that he deploys.

Scott also doesn’t have any record of managing elite players, and this should be a tricky thing to judge for the chiefs at Tottenham.

Where has he managed before?

He has had stints at Fulham, Bournemouth and Club Brugge. With the Cottagers, he got promoted to the English top tier via the playoffs, but then his side struggled in the Premiership. With Bournemouth, he got the Cherries into the Premier League automatically but was sacked in his second season. And lastly, coming to Club Brugge, he had a short yet unsuccessful stint where he was sacked after being a disappointment in the Champions League.

Everything is pointing to a no, but let’s look at this from Tottenham’s and the North Londoners’ alignments

Tottenham want to fight at the top of the Premier League table and in the European competitions; Parker doesn’t boast a successful record in either.

Then there has been a huge focus on developing young players at Hotspur. Way off late, and Parker also doesn’t boast a tremendous record here.

He also doesn’t have any trophies to his name at an elite level and will not be an appealing name for the global brand of Tottenham Hotspur.
