Tottenham Hotspur chiefs are yet to make a decision on the future of Mathys Tel
Mathys Tel arrived at Tottenham Hotspur on loan from Bayern Munich during the winter transfer window with a lot of fanfare and equal parts of expectations on his head.
The Lilywhites also managed to negotiate an option with Bayern Munich to buy the forward on a permanent basis in the summer for around €60m. They fended off competition from Premier League rivals Manchester United and Chelsea for his signature, and it felt like Spurs bagged a coup of sorts.
Touted as one of the best young attackers in the world and has the potential to be a world-class player in the future, the Frenchman’s impact at N17 has been minimal, however. Mathys Tel has found it difficult to get going in Ange Postecoglou’s side, netting just three goals in 14 appearances across all competitions thus far.
This has left the Tottenham fans a bit divided as to whether the club should trigger the buy option or not for the teenage sensation. No one knows whether Tottenham will trigger Tel’s buy clause or not at the end of the season.

Now, former Manchester United and Blackburn Rovers scout Mick Brown feels it is currently unlikely that Tel will remain at Spurs beyond the ongoing season. The North Londoners are set to hold talks with Bayern before deciding about the player’s future. He feels if they can renegotiate a realistic lower fee, there is a possibility then that the French attacker will make the move to N17 permanent.
“From what I hear, I think he’ll be going back to Bayern,” Mick Brown exclusively told Football Insider.
“He’s not quite lived up to expectations since he’s been there, and I think we’re seeing some of the reasons why Bayern were keen to let him go. I don’t doubt in an ideal world they’d want to keep him, but he hasn’t shown enough to warrant that price tag of almost £50million.
“It’s a deal that, to put it simply, is not going to happen at that price. I expect they’ll speak to Bayern Munich, and if there’s a possibility to bring that price down, then they may see what they can do.
“As much as he hasn’t lived up to the billing, he’s still a talented player. If Tottenham can get into the Champions League, I’m sure he’ll be more likely to want to stick around. At the moment though, with their place in the league and the money involved, it’s unlikely.”

Tel has been trying to take advantage of opportunities afforded to him in the Tottenham first XI with skipper Son Heung-min out injured. He is lacking the end product and has been frustrating at times with his decision-making on and off the ball.

Tottenham have given no indication about their plans regarding the Sarcelles-born talent. The decision, of course, has to be mutual, and a lot will depend on what the teenage prodigy wants after he completes the remainder of the season. Winning the Europa League, and thereby qualifying for the Champions League, could play a big role in the club bosses’ efforts to sign Tel permanently—perhaps at a lower fee than €60m.
