Postecoglou pleased for Tottenham star who made the most of his ‘opportunity’

Lucas Bergvall has signed a new six-year contract at Tottenham Hotspur

It has been a disastrous season for Ange Postecoglou and his future lies in the balance, but there was some good news for Tottenham Hotspur and our fans this week.

Spurs confirmed that Lucas Bergvall has penned a new contract. The teenager, signed from Swedish side IF Djurgarden last year, has now committed his future to the club until 2031. Only into his debut season in English football, it’s already clear that the £8.5m investment has paid off.

Despite the North London club’s domestic struggles, Lucas Bergvall has emerged as one of the rare bright spots under the tutelage of Ange Postecoglou. The 19-year-old has slowly but steadily grown into stature, cementing his place in the first XI ahead of experienced midfielders. The Sweden international has brought composure, endurance, creativity and tactical intelligence, making him a crucial first-team player.

Experienced Tottenham midfielder James Maddison, speaking to the press ahead of Thursday’s game against Bodo/Glimt in the Europa League, gave his thoughts on Bergvall’s new contract and what has impressed him about the youngster in training.

Also, Ange Postecoglou had glowing praise for the central midfielder’s rise and new contract. The Australian tactician felt the new six-year deal was a reward for the player’s development, which reinforced the club’s commitment to youth and its nurturing.

“Yeah hugely so and I’m delighted for Lucas. It’s reward for his development this year, his performances and how well he has adapted,” Postecoglou told Football London.

“We’ve got to remember a lot of young guys who come to the Premier League maybe have a step in between whether that is playing in another league, but he has come straight from the Swedish league, a year of senior football and it’s a credit to him. He’s worked really hard at his game. At the beginning he was struggling to cope with the intensity and tempo, as you’d expect and we expected.

“A lot of our football and life in general is opportunity. He had an opportunity this year because of the situation we were in and he grabbed it with both hands. And even now, we’ve virtually got a full squad to pick from and he’s still being selected because he took the opportunity. I think there is a core group of young players here that hopefully we can build something from.”

Bergvall would not have expected to feature heavily in his debut season at Tottenham. In fact, the prospect of using the youngster regularly may not have crossed Ange’s mind either when he officially arrived at N17 in July 2024.

A glut of injuries and inconsistency issues opened the door for the Stockholm-born talent, and he grabbed the opportunities that came his way with both hands. He has 45 appearances across all competitions to date, including 27 in the Premier League. Bergvall has also chipped in with a goal and four assists, displaying his ability to contribute in the final third.
