Interest in Serie A manager grows hot as Tottenham ramp up the heat

Tottenham Hotspur set their sights on appointing Inter Milan boss Simone Inzaghi as Ange Postecoglou’s replacement

Tottenham Hotspur are now heading for their worst Premier League finish to date, having never ended up outside the top 15 since the competition’s debut season in 1992/93.

While they can still qualify for next season’s Champions League by winning the Europa League, failure to do so could prove to be a huge blow in pursuit of their summer transfer targets. The Lilywhites are likely to resolve the future of Ange Postecoglou before pursuing any new signings, and there is a growing feeling that the Australian head coach could depart at the end of the campaign.

Ange Postecoglou is expected to depart from the Spurs hotseat, regardless of whether he ends the club’s 17-year-long trophy drought by enjoying Europa League glory, resulting in chairman Daniel Levy and his bosses behind the scenes identifying potential replacements.

Tottenham want Simone Inzaghi to become their new head coach

Levy and Co. have already drawn up a list of potential successors, with Burnley boss Scott Parker among the names being considered. Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola has been Levy’s No.1 target to replace Postecoglou, but the Spanish tactician poured cold water over the growing links with a move to N17 on Sunday. Another name who has been on the club’s radar for some time now is Inter Milan boss Simone Inzaghi.

The Italian’s stock has risen considerably in recent years. After taking Inter Milan to the 2022/23 Champions League final, he led them to a resounding Serie A triumph last season as they won the Scudetto with a staggering 19-point lead over the runners-up and bitter rivals, AC Milan.

This season, too, Inter are right in the mix for the Serie A title and are currently three points off the league leaders Napoli, with just three games left to play.

Now, according to a report from Italian outlet Inter Live, Simone Inzaghi’s links with Tottenham are ‘getting hotter’ as far as the managerial role at N17 is concerned. Spurs feel there is a possibility the Italian tactician leaves Giuseppe Meazza at the end of the season, especially if he manages to win the Champions League and Serie A title.

The 49-year-old is one of the highly-rated tacticians on the continent, someone well-admired in the Premier League. An experience in the Premier League is likely to appeal to the Piacenza-born tactician, who has already built a strong CV in Italy with Lazio and Inter.

Ange Postecoglou is unlikely to stay at Tottenham beyond the ongoing season

Simone Inzaghi’s rising stock makes him a compelling candidate for the Tottenham job, especially with uncertainty looming over Ange Postecoglou’s future. His tactical acumen, man-management skills, and recent success with Inter Milan—including a potential domestic-European double, have naturally piqued Spurs’ interest. If he decides to leave the Giuseppe Meazza this summer, Tottenham might just present the kind of Premier League challenge that would entice the 49-year-old Italian to test himself in England.

From Daniel Levy’s perspective, Inzaghi ticks several boxes: he brings winning pedigree, European experience, and a pragmatic approach that could restore balance to a Spurs side struggling with defensive vulnerabilities. The fact that links between Inzaghi and Spurs are reportedly “getting hotter” suggests the club are seriously considering a shift towards a more stable, methodical managerial profile. If Postecoglou departs and Inzaghi becomes available, this could be one of the most strategic hires Tottenham have made in years.

The aforementioned report adds that the Nerazzurri want to renew Inzaghi’s contract, which currently expires in mid-2026. Inter president Beppe Marotta has been confident for a while that an agreement with be struck, but his farewell from Inter this summer now looks a big possibility. And Tottenham are ready to provide a ‘top’ salary for the current Inter boss to lure him away to North London.

Inzaghi is a shrewd tactician with a sharp mind who has proven himself in Italy. Perhaps, he is looking for a new challenge, and the Premier League seemingly attracts him. However, it will be a difficult task for the Hotspur Way chiefs to appoint Inzaghi as Postecoglou’s replacement, given the make-up of our current squad, resources and budget.

If Levy feels the 49-year-old is the right fit, he will have to make wholesale changes to the current squad, as it is not equipped to operate in a 3-4-3/3-5-2 system. That would also point to a change in approach and direction in the market, something Levy and his bosses will need to be wary about before replacing Ange at the helm.
