Atletico Madrid are interested in signing Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur this summer
Tottenham Hotspur need to address the problems in midfield this summer. The midfielders have been extremely inconsistent this season, bar teenager Lucas Bergvall, who recently was rewarded with a six-year deal in recognition of his meteoric rise after arriving at N17 last year.
As a result, Ange Postecoglou has struggled to carve out positive results due to the lack of form and inconsistency from his players. The mediocre performances on the pitch have also left the fans frustrated.
Spurs need to find a balance in their setup, especially in midfield, which has been easily bypassed by the opposition multiple times this season. Plus, senior stars such as Rodrigo Bentancur, James Maddison and Yves Bissouma haven’t done enough to take control of things in the centre of the park and help the team dominate games.

Regardless, Rodrigo Bentancur has been linked with a move to a top club in Spanish football. Atletico Madrid have been keen on signing the Uruguayan international, who is on course to enter the final year of his contract at White Hart Lane.
There had been speculation around a new contract for the central midfielder in North London. While negotiations are yet to commence, Atletico Madrid may test Tottenham’s resolve for Rodrigo Bentancur before the summer window officially reopens in June. Ex-Spurs scout Bryan King suggested last month that Tottenham would at least demand £35million to sell the player.
Now, Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham feels this is the right time for the club to cash in on Bentancur amid interest from Atletico Madrid.
“Bentancur will only have a year left on his deal this summer, and he has had multiple issues this season, such as suspensions and injuries. Therefore, I feel this is the perfect time for a clean break,” John Wenham exclusively told Tottenham News.
“I think Bentancur is a good player, and significantly better than Yves Bissouma. However, this is the perfect time for the midfielder to move on from Tottenham, and I can see a deal being agreed.”

Bentancur has failed to live up to the lofty expectations of the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium faithful due to a combination of injury problems—mostly freak issues—and inconsistency. When fit, he has been a regular in Ange Postecoglou’s first XI.
Ange has used the Uruguayan as a deep-lying playmaker in his 4-2-3-1 system. The former Juventus man has an elite physical profile given how strong he is going into duels and the capacity he possesses while carrying the ball through midfield. However, when taking things from a tactical point of view, he has not been a clean fit for the kind of football Ange has employed at Spurs, with the South American lacking the ball-winning skills to complement his technical ability on the ball.

Spurs must delay a decision on Bentancur’s future until a new manager is appointed. If the potential new boss feels he is a dispensable asset, and Atletico also table a decent offer, the club chiefs must not hesitate to sell Bentancur and get an adequate replacement.
