Manchester United legend wary of Tottenham threat in Europe; rattles Spurs faithful with final prediction
Tottenham face Manchester United in the Europa League final this season
Tottenham Hotspur have managed to do the unthinkable and reach the Europa League finals. The Lilywhites are enduring their worst ever domestic campaign and they sit 16th in the Premier League. There is a realistic possibility that the North London club finishes the season just a place above the relegation zone. Ange Postecoglou’s men are also on their way to record the club’s lowest ever points tally in a single Premier League season.
However, the club’s journey in the Europa League paints a different picture. The Lilywhites are now just ninety minutes away from winning the competition and ensuring their place in the Champions League next season. Spurs confirmed their place in the final after beating Bodo/Glimt 0-2 away from home on Thursday night.
Second half goals from Dominic Solanke and Pedro Porro ensured that Tottenham won the tie comfortably in tricky conditions. The Lilywhites also managed to keep a clean sheet, which indicated that the players executed the gameplan perfectly. Ange Postecoglou now has the chance of keeping his promise of winning a trophy in his second at the club.
Paul Scholes believes Tottenham will not win the Europa League
Tottenham are going to face Manchester United in the Europa League final. The Lilywhites have already beaten United thrice this season in all competitions. Ange’s men know how to beat the Red Devils, and fans will hope that history repeats itself. It is a one-off and United might be seen as the slight favourites heading into the final. Ruben Amorim’s side are unbeaten in Europe this season, so beating them would be an extraordinary achievement.
However, Paul Scholes does not think that Spurs will win the Europa League. The Man United legend said on TNT Sports (via Metro),
“Man United know how to win trophies, Tottenham don’t. We know Spurs have beat them three times this season and they’re a really good team. I like Tottenham. If they watch that first 70 minutes [of United’s second leg against Bilbao] Spurs will think they’ve got a good chance.‘ I just feels the odds are slightly in United’s favour. But I do think Spurs are a good side on their day.”
Paul Scholes was straight to the point and insisted that Tottenham do not know how to win trophies. The ex-England international also acknowledged that Spurs have beaten United three times this season and they are a good team. Scholes also admitted that he likes Tottenham and Ange Postecoglou but the odds favour Manchester United.
It is now 17 years since the Lilywhites won a major trophy. They have come close to winning a few times, but have always fallen short of the mark. But this season, Spurs have a real chance of ending the trophy drought. They face a Manchester United side that are struggling to get results in the Premier League. Ange Postecoglou has the chance to end the season on a high and give the fans a lasting memory.
