Tottenham could revive their interest in Crystal Palace skipper Marc Guehi to replace Cristian Romero in the summer
Tottenham Hotspur suffered their 20th loss of the season in the Premier League against Crystal Palace on Sunday, continuing their dreadful form domestically.
Spurs are focusing on their European journey, which could salvage something from their dismal campaign. They will face Manchester United in the Europa League final next week, meaning there is a chance Ange Postecoglou’s side could win a trophy and subsequently qualify for Champions League football, despite dropping to 17th in the league standings.
Not only may Ange Postecoglou’s future depend on the result in Bilbao next week, but their ability to recruit quality players could also be hindered if the Lilywhites’ fail to achieve their season’s objective. Keeping that in mind, former Spurs goalkeeper Paul Robinson has underlined Spurs’ defensive unit as one of their priorities heading into the summer transfer window.

As things stand, Cristian Romero is heading through the White Hart Lane exit door. Atletico Madrid have been showing interest to recruit Romero this summer, with coach Diego Simeone already holding talks with the Tottenham star.
With Micky van de Ven injury prone and Radu Dragusin ruled out for the season and beyond following an ACL rupture, Paul Robinson thinks the North Londoners will need to sign at least two new centre-backs in the summer. And the English pundit feels Crystal Palace skipper Marc Guehi, who was heavily linked with a January move to N17, will be Tottenham’s priority defensive target.
“With Romero leaving, it’s looking more and more likely day by day that he’s going to move on. So you could argue that Tottenham are already a centre-half short. Radu Dragusin and Archie Gray are playing most of the season there, with Ben Davies having to fill in. If Romero does go, they’re going to need two more, in my opinion,” Robinson exclusively told Tottenham News.
“Guehi would be top of the list if they can beat anyone else to his signature. But without Champions League football, finishing 16th, potentially 17th in the Premier League, is that an attractive proposition? Or can Newcastle offer Champions League football and a better salary? And that’s where Tottenham are at the moment. There’s so much hanging on their Europa League success.”

Marc Guehi has established himself as one of the Premier League’s most consistent and reliable defenders in the last few years, thereby attracting interest from several top clubs in England. He was the subject of a shock £70million bid from Tottenham during the winter transfer window, which was quickly rejected by the Eagles as they did not want to sell one of their prized assets midway through the season.
However, with the England international now about to enter the final year of his contract and hesitant to sign a new deal at Selhurst Park, Palace will be forced to cash him in rather than risk losing on a free transfer in 2026. Spurs must take advantage of Guehi’s situation and go for the offensive. Given the North Londoners’ desperate need for a strong and proven central defender who can be Romero’s long-term replacement, Guehi is someone we must plan to invest in.

But as Robinson rightly points out, winning the Europa League becomes crucial for Spurs to attract top talents, including Guehi. A win over Man United in Bilbao would give them an entry to Champions League football next season, which will put Daniel Levy and Co. in good stead to lure Guehi away from Tottenham’s London rivals.
