Tottenham Hotspur to assess Ashley Phillips during pre-season following standout progress
Tottenham had a season they didn’t expect, sitting in 17th place in the league, and could be about to have their worst season in a long time. However, while their domestic run has left a lot to be desired, they have enjoyed modifications in Europe, reaching the finals and will be the favourites to come away with the silverware against a weakened and deconstructed Manchester United side. Nevertheless, the season has been full of surprises with the loan players performs better than expected and reports have suggested that Tottenham will make a decision on Ashley Phillips in pre-season after his loan steps over the last few days. The young defender spent the season on loan at Stoke City, playing a key role in keeping the Potters out of relegation in the Championship.

Following several injuries to Tottenham’s defence this season, and with UEFA Champions League qualification looking increasingly unlikely, a decision will soon be made regarding Ashley Phillips. The young defender impressed during his loan spell at Stoke City, making 39 appearances and even scoring against Southampton in the Carabao Cup. His strong performances are expected to have drawn attention at Hotspur Way. Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham, speaking to Tottenham News, believes the club will assess Phillips in pre-season before deciding on his future at the age of 19.
Spurs set to reassess the youngster due impressive performances
Tottenham’s Premier League campaign has been a case of high risk with little reward, often hampered by Postecoglou’s demanding, high-intensity style and a string of defensive injuries. At one point in January, there was even speculation of an early recall for Ashley Phillips to help fill the gaps at the back.
Reflecting on Phillips’ loan spell, Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham speaking to Tottenham News reported that the 19-year-old had an outstanding season with Stoke City. Phillips made 39 appearances, clocked over 3,000 minutes, and earned strong support from the fans—many of whom named him their standout performer in the final stretch of the season. According to Stoke’s manager, Phillips even played through injury, further highlighting his character and commitment.
Wenham believes the young defender will return for pre-season, likely travel with the squad on their Asia tour, and undergo full assessment before Tottenham decide his next steps. For a teenager to thrive in a physically demanding environment like Stoke and emerge as a fan favourite suggests he has a promising future ahead.

“Some even suggested that he single-handedly kept the club in the Championship with some of his heroic defensive performances. He even played through injury, according to their manager, which is fantastic.”
“I think he’ll come back for pre-season, head on the tour of Asia, and Tottenham will make a decision on what his future holds. However, for a 19-year-old to go and dominate in a big physical side like Stoke, and become well-loved, tells me he’s got a bright future.”
